I searched for a bit but couldn't find anyone who has tried this to their street car...
What if you cut the "sump" out of the trunk floor where the exhaust has to snake around, and re-fiberglassed a flat panel over the hole? I personally don't use the sump space for any real storage and it seems to cause a fuss for the exhaust to make a straight exit like the c6's do.
If I were to undertake this, is there any special kind of fiberglass or resin needed for the under belly of our cars like SMC?
Lastly... Who thinks this is even a good idea, structurally speaking?
I like that area. I keep my battery jumpstart booster pack in the big one and some detailing supplies in the other small otherwise vacant one.
Seems like it would be real expensive to do, or time consuming if you do it your self. What is it you plan to do with the new found under care space? Just a custom exhaust made just for your car?
My intention is to run the exhaust out in a smoother, straighter shot giving myself more room and more muffler choices.
The time is really no issue with me and the expense is only going to be in supplies. The more I think of it, I can cut it out and screw in a sheet metal or aluminum panel for a "meantime" fix. The only real issue I have is will it be structurally un-sound if I do this?
Fiberglass would be fine. I would put down some sheet alumium or something simmilar first and then layer fiberglass over top of that. I'll prob be doing that to mine soon to free up some more room under there as well.
There is nothing structural about that big stash bin. It's just part of the formed fiberglass inner body part. Cut it out and make that area flat would be easy. I'm with TTZ though. I think I would use aluminum or better yet lexan. Seal it in place so fumes can't get back in the cabin and you're good. You'll have to custom cut and hack your carpet up. For my track car this sounds like a good idea and easy to do. Think I'll do that this winter.
It shouldn't be hard to cut out. There is not much under the car that attaches or gets near it to speak of. A small cutoff disc from inside the car. Just watch out for hitting the frame rails as they run on each side of the bin to the bumper. The bumper is clear of the bin.
Good deal. I'll be taking this project on once I've finished with the engine job on my friends TA. I'll post pics along the way too.
I've got a good idea for the trunk floor after I get the plate in place. I've already made the trunk partition and my own storage bin/cup holder for the back and the carpet I found matches PERFECTLY so I'm stoked about this one. Alex.
