I found the red 3-volume, soft-bound, 2001 Corvette Y manual set published by GM on eBay for $157 shipped. In great shape, pages were clean and no tears or dog-earring. Interestingly enough, I have found one error in the manual (page 7-7 in volume 2) so they aren't 100% but much better than guessing or assuming you know.
I don't do anything serious on a production car unless I have the manual. Once I have the manual I don't back away from any task.
You made a good decision. The service manuals are worth it. Don't know if you checked but often times, there are service manuals for sale here on the forum in the For Sale section. You'll be pleased that you purchased the manuals.
As an aside, there is a PDF of the C5 parts manual that has exploded detail parts diagrams and lists GM part numbers for every part on the car. It's about a 124mb download but well worth it. If I need a part from the dealer I don't have to worry about the parts guy finding and getting it right, I just give him the part number which makes his job a lot easier.
You can find the link to the file in the following thread, last link in post number 4.
