You have got to be kidding me.

Well I have to come in here and add my 2 cents. The bottom line is YES aftermarket intakes do add noticible gains however there is always a price to pay with an aftermarket intake. Usually loss in filtration and increased noise.
I'll buy the loss of filtration, but since you don't have your Z06, let me say that you will not hear a little extra induction noise. That could NOT have been a concern in the design of the induction system at GM. The car is LOUD from the back already.Well I have to come in here and add my 2 cents. I am not alone in installing an aftermarket partition between the trunk area and the cockpit to reduce exhaust and road noise from the back.

My friends 02 WS6 Firechicken picked up ALOT of power with the true ram air conversion for the nostrols and the new filter box.
My guess is that it came from one of two areas, less pressure drop over the filter (lower filtration as you mentioned) or a better pathway for the air to flow. But, as you can see from looking over this thread - ram air for cars is a myth. I have yet to see anyone offer any science that says otherwise. My friends 02 WS6 Firechicken picked up ALOT of power with the true ram air conversion for the nostrols and the new filter box.

A factory will always design the system with reliability and sound in mind. Many times an opened up intake will bring about harsh induction noise that penetrates deep into the cabin (sometimes wrose then a free flowing exhaut system) this along with the **** poor filtration drives the manufacture to compramise on the intake, leaving room for improvements.
I agree with the reliability, but the Z06 is NOT quiet now, I don't think induction system noise was a serious factor in their design.A factory will always design the system with reliability and sound in mind. The z06 may be pretty tweaked from the factory but it is not a die hard no corners cut performance machine.
I agree with that, but if gains were THAT easy to find in the induction system, don't you think they would have tried to come up with reliable ways to implement some of them, rather than spending some serious dollars on high tech solutions, like liquid sodium filled exhaust valves and the like? The z06 may be pretty tweaked from the factory but it is not a die hard no corners cut performance machine.
Sure they aren't going to reduce the reliability of the engine by lowering their filtration standards and allowing more dirt into the engine, but I bet most of the people running aftermarket units don't THINK they are either.
They think it is cold air and ram air. Why wouldn't GM use those if they worked?

I mean look at the stock seats for heavens sake, far from a performance seat.
Boy do I agree with you there, but people yell at me when I say it! ;)I mean look at the stock seats for heavens sake, far from a performance seat.

The Vararm is a good filter but one of the most expensive intake systems. I think the Vortex ram air is the best bang for the buck.
The best bang for the buck is the K&N in the stock 02 box. I tryed it on my 01 and 02. I was the first to put an 01 in the 11's with the stock box unmodified. All of us were opening the air boxes with K&N's in the 80-90's on vette's, it's not a new idea with C5's, nothing new, usualy only rediscovered new idea's.My testing showed a real 1/2mph gain with an open box on the 01,it's less on an 02, but it would have been easy to mistake the couple of mph gains on some day's and figure it was the box, in my case it was weather/or track condition. These system's are not equil but you have to pay attention to what the car want's with ANY change to get the advantage, luck and weather conditions as well as driver improvement are variables allso, the are hard to interpert acuratly and it looks simpler than it is. Some people are honestly trying to share there impresion's and others are just on a band wagon for a particular mod. It's up to each individual to try to figuer out what is best for them. I for one think choice is a good thing. YMMV Ric
funny that us ay that power shifter.
i have an 01 Z06, and i just ordered the 02 air box cover with a K&N airfilter..lol
i hope i get some horses out of those 2 simple mods.

After starting all this polling and debate, I went with the BlackWing + a ported TB on my 2002 Z06. So far, I'm mildly pleased. Not the WOW factor the Halltech TRIC + COBRA bridge was on my 99 C5, but the 02 Z's intake is substantially improved anyhow.
Factors in my decision?
1. Ease of install & return to stock.
2. Lingering questions surrounding 02 Z's performance with T-1.
3. No potential for H2O ingestion unless car is submerged (vs bottom breather like Vortex, etc.)
4. Cost is less than T-1 or Vararam.
5. ALL the major tuners (Mallet, LPE, Vinci are using BlackWing)
I loved my Halltech before, and almost went that way, but in the end made a different decision....

ExploreI have the VARARAM intake, and I love it. I could tell a difference in performance as soon as I drove it. I :D :D
Lets all face facts, any and all work great. We all got the one we thought was the best. Lets do the real poll and ask which one looks the best and it will mean a lot more.

Those are all great times. Interesting that your mph dropped with the Halltec though. Your bone stock e.t.s and mphs are faster than many of the guys with CAI's installed.2002 Z06 Red/Mod Red

Another data point that raises questions about the "ram-air" boxes.

There are gains to be had. But were talking air box and filters. Not major mechanical changes. The bigest gain available to most, is figureing how to take advantage of the Z06 stock power. Then is easer to quantify the small mod gain. Doing mods and be not being able to take advantage of them can be over come with practice, and that's the FUN part. :yesnod: Ricfunny that us ay that power shifter.
