when i bought my Y2K coupe i really wanted a C6 Z06. could not justify the price. i still want a C6 Z06, and i still can't justify the price. don't get me wrong, i like the C5 coupe alot - but i definitely "settled".
I was 50/50 between my coupe and a 99-00 FRC. I didn't want a Z because I planned on modding anyway and it seemed like it would be cool to correct people and say its not a Z.
I ended up getting the coupe and couldn't be happier. Plus I love the targa.
I cant believe some of you guys saying you compromised on the tranny. Mine had to be a 6 speed and I wouldn't take an auto if you gave it to me. The driving experience is just so different.
When I first started looking for vettes I had one thing in mind...silver c5 Z06. The planets alligned and I got just what I was looking for at an awesome price.
Funny thing was I had seen the add for a week or so but didn't call the guy. When I finally did he said he sold it that day. We bs'd a bit about it and how he put long tubes and a high flow catted X pipe on it recently. The next morinig he called informing me the buyer blew his engine on the way to pick it up and offered him a very low price. Long and short of it, I got it.
It's an 01z with 67K on it for 16K. The price was perfect and the miles weren't too bad. The only thing that wasn't great (and this is fixed easily with more mods) is that it's the 01 with the heavier valve train and smaller cam. No biggie to this guy though.
Nope, didn't settle...looked for several months for a C5 with high mileage (150K+, gonna be a complete rebuild so mileage didn't really matter to me, and had a pretty small budget). Was giving up when I saw a C5Z with less than 116K miles only 2 hours from me, about $2K over my budget but around $4K below expected selling price from a dealer. Saw it one Sunday, bought it the next Saturday. That was about three weeks ago, already have a box full of small trim pieces en route to me that needed replacing, and AR Headers are on order from Randy @ Ragin Racin.
Nope, didn't "settle". Ordered it just the way I wanted it. Waited and waited and waited and then the phone call. "Come pick it up". 13 years ago this coming December. Wonder where the time has gone......Hmmm, just sorta slipped away.
I got pretty damn close. I wanted an 02 EB z06 with the TR interior with 3xk miles. I ended up with an 02 EB Z06 with TR interior with 43k miles. It was a couple thousand more than I'd hoped to pay but it was local and from a specialty Z06 dealer. Between the little extra piece of mind I got by not buying it private party not having to go out of state to get it, I was OK with the extra couple grand I spent.
I was looking for rear drive with ponies and have always wanted an AC Shelby Cobra. So went to test drive a very nice replica and no go.......I'm just too big for a car like that unless I build one around me.
Next choice.....Corvette.....
So I settled for something different but certainly not "less".
Began my search for a Torch Red Coupe....specifically with a manual trans.
While internet searching and a couple of test drives of cars that would have been "settling", I saw this Pewter beauty at a local exotics dealership and went to take a look.
Love at first sight......color and all. Fully loaded, right price, okay mileage, with a MN6.....I'm IN!!
First 'Vette....NO regrette...(spelling intentional)
Had to be a C5Z low miles red with mod int. Finally found it about 2 hours away. The previous owner had made many nice mods already and once i get long tube headers it will be complete,,,,wait the mods never really stop do they?
No, didn't settle, just the opposite, bought Way more than I started out looking for. I was trying to decide between an older C4, or an LT1 C4 or a 97 to 99 C5. With some help from forum members (Vetteman Jack and racebum) decided on a C5. But was settling on something with every older C5 I looked at. Finally worked up to 01/02 models when a dealer slashed the price on a 04 to at or below what the 01/02 cars were selling for around here. It had every option I wanted, the right tranny (A4) and I wanted a coupe that was tight, (no squeaks) and I got it.
If I setteled for anything, I wanted the chrome/polished stock wheels found on the 00 to 02s. Instead I've got the low sheen, silver alloy wheels (painted?). Otherwise it's exactly how I would have ordered it, even has the right brand of tires (Michelin) I wanted.
I would have settled for a lot less but I got lucky and found one that exceeded what I wanted. It had to be millenium yellow and a targa cause I like the hatch look. I really wanted HUD but would have settled for none..... No aftermarket done fo it, stock wheels, no ugly custom interior, I also wanted a yellow top but would have settled for glass. Oh and its an 04 so I feel settling is the opposite of what happened. it had everything I wanted and more. The only thing missing is that its a 2.73 yup automatic.
Found the exact car I was looking for before I bought my old daily driver. Sold my 3rd weekend car and bought the vette. Then proceeded to sell the DD as I didnt want a payment anymore. Been enjoying it ever since!
