I bought a C5 and it has a round metal shift **** on it. I hate these and want a leather one.
I looked online and leather ones USED are selling for almost $100, so I thought I'd buy a universal one like I've put on cars in the past but then I got a little worried- why would a used one cost $100 if you can just buy a universal ones that almost looks the same?
So my question is, will a universal one work, and if not, is the only option OEM? (I saw an aftermarket one but it requires a core OR costs $120!)
The universal shift ***** I've seen have injection-molded thread inserts. While they work okay, initially, don't expect them to last more than a few years. The inserts are kind of flimsy. Have you ever tried the "Bullet"?
You may be able to find someone selling his stock shift **** in the parts for sale section. You can probably find em for like 20 bucks too. Just make sure you get a "demon" key too, otherwise you will have to thread a nut onto the shaft below the **** to align the ****.

...not leather, but yet not slippery.
I plan on putting about 500 miles on this car per year, so this is good to know that they at least will fit. I have not tried the "bullet". I see these are a polymer (AKA not metal), and not metal is good. Do these fit pretty well? I'll consider one of these if I can't find a used one for sale at a decent price.

I glanced once, but I'll keep my eyes on the parts for sale section over winter and if I have no luck, I'll probably go with the universal! Thanks for the suggestion!

Go to http://www.gscreationsllc.com/index.php. Look in "interior parts" for C5. They have the C6 leather shifter **** made to fit the C5 for a little less than $100.00. Put one on about a year ago and love it.

Am I the only one that thinks $100 for a shift **** is crazy? haha. I think I'm going to stick under about 30-40 for now! haha. But then again I doubt I'll have my car more than 1000 miles or a year or two, or maybe then it would be worth investing in everythign I want! haha.
Side note, I work in Hamilton (Vora Tech Park) and Live in West Chester... I don't ever drive the vette to work though, normally in my truck or my MB!
Universal shift ***** will generally come with a brass insert to adapt the threads to the specific application. Unless the **** is specifically represented as suitable for a C5, you will need to request the appropriate adapter. If I recall, The C5 shifter is threaded 9/16-18.
I have a universal MOMO "anatomic" leather **** for sale. I used it for a week before upgrading to a C6Z06 short shifter. Comes with centering set screws, rubber grommet, allen key, and original box. Simple swap installation.
They usually sell new for $70 or so shipped. PM me if you're interested.
And to answer your question, they fit like oem without using the threads. Most probably wouldn't know the difference.

The nice thing about symetrical shapes is that no set screw or jam nut is necessary. This "bullet" is threaded specifically for a C5. The material is impervious to UV rays.
I have a momo universal as well you get a rubber insert for the inner diameter and the 3 screws lock it in. I've had for 4 years it doesn't move and leather is top quality.
