I have a stock 2000 6 speed with 42,000 miles. The oil was changed at the beginning of the summer ( Mobil 1 ) and now there is 40% oil life remaining. I was driving it today and the "low oil level" indication lite up. I immediately checked the oil and it was maybe a half quart lower. I topped it off, hit the rest button, but the low oil level keeps coming on. I know the oil level is right where it should be according to the dip stick, but it scares the hell out of me when I'm driving down the road, and that warning comes on. So, any ideas on what it could be? Thanks in advance for the input.
Mine would occasionally come on when parked slightly nose down - I back into my driveway when I have the car at home and the driveway has a slight incline up to the garage. When I park in the driveway and then start it up to put it in the garage I will get the low oil level warning.
Last oil change I also replaced the oil level sensor and have not had any warnings since. It was about $21 from the dealer and took about 10 minutes to replace. You'll need a 1-1/8 socket if I recall correctly. Easy to get to if you can lift the car.
I can get the car up on a lift, so I'll start with replacing the sensor, and also inspecting the wires. I was told these wires can deteriorate over time because how close they are to the exhaust.
Yes, a wire inspection should be done, but unless you're running aftermarket long tube headers or some other non-factory exhaust, the wires will most likely be okay. I noticed my wires had wire loom around them to protect them from the routing near the exhaust manifolds.
Also be aware you should drain the crankcase before removing the oil level sensor. The torque spec on the oil level sensor is 10 lb/ft if I recall - you should verify that.
