Last week I finally decided to replace the windshield in my Z06. The old one had some rock chips and heavy scratches. The local Safelite glass shop manager told me that the DW1430 windshield is the correct on for the 2001 Z06 because it has no antena and it's much cheaper than the HUD windshield. Sounded like he knew what he was talking about.
I told him that I was concerned about water leaks if it was not installed properly. He assured me that it would be no problem to replace the windshield and the price would be less than $300.
I had it at his shop at 8 AM. At 2:30 I stopped by to pick up the car. They were just cutting the old windshield out. At 5 PM I stopped by to pay and bring the car home. Still in pieces. They had not water tested the car so I said I'll pick it up by noon tommorrow.
Got a ride to the glass shop the next day and was greeted by the manager with bad news. The factory seals and molding were leaking. He said he called an area manger who told him Z06's were tough to do and to order all new seals and trim pieces. I asked "how much more"? He said "no charge". We promised the job would be done correctly and it is our fault that it was not done right. The new GM factory stuff will be at his shop in about a week. I was never rude or upset about the situation. I even offered to split the cost with him. Even though the job is not yet complete, how would you feel when you recieve service like that?
It's great that the shop is standing by their work, however it would be nice if they called you to provide you status to prevent you from stopping by the shop, only to be disappointed on three separate occassions.
I hope the final repair/work is up to your satisfaction.
I will guarantee you it's NOT the correct windshield for your Z, they don't make them anymore. The correct one if can find it will set you back approx. $900.00 just for the windshield NOT including labor to install. The correct windshield is thinner / lighter then the one he sold you, that's how they came form the factory when the Z's was new.
He sold you the one for the Convertible with a separate antenna like our Z's.
If you don't care about the 7.5 additional pounds in weight ( lighter windshield ) it will work just fine, if it looks wavy when you are looking through it = made in CHINA. Don't accept this and ask for one made in the good old USA.
The END
P.S., that's probably why they had to order new gaskets - thicker glass ?
Wow....what a nightmare just to replace a friggen windshield. Too bad they didn't tell you upfront what type of glass it was, where it was made, and all that miscellaneous BS. A leaking seal? As of they didn't know beforehand? Maybe so....and maybe this was the first Corvette they did. Hopefully, they won't be using black tile caulking to seal the deal.
Good luck. This is why I haven't touched my windshield even when I should have it replaced.
The glass was made by pilkington. It did not appear to have any waves in it. Not really worried about the 7.5 lbs of extra weight. I'll just let 2 psi out of each tire.
Plinkington is an OEM supplier to high end European manufacturers, as well as Honda, Toyota, Ford and GM, so there is no worry about the glass being cheap Chinese junk.

your wrong on that one..the back glass and windshield shaved 7.5 lbs off the car..not just the windshield by its self...and the average person would never feel the difference of the added weight of the different windshield
I have heard so many good stories about Safelite. I will definitely have them replace mine someday when I get that ding.
Ditto... and using the DW1430 is the best deal ever... its hundreds of bucks less and IS THE SAME WINDSHIELD as the "OEM". Chevy just created two part numbers but used the same part..
I'd be happy to get the free parts. I'd say they are doing their best to fix a problem that may not have been their fault. It's entirely possible the aftermarket catalogs list the winshields as the same. Lauries Jag has Pilkington glass in it. Not that it means much these days. I bought Goodyear Marathons for my car trailer....made in China.

I walked the lot full of corvettes last weekend at a get together looking at the differences in the C5 removeable tops, convertables and hard tops. The Z06's were different as far as the molding around the sides of the windshield. Even the trim piece on the top of the windshield was different on the Z. The actual installation of the glass may be the same on all C5's but the trim appears to be the kicker. I'll see how it turns out in a few days.
And I was just kidding about the 2 psi in each tire. I thought that I would get some comments on that one.
I have had a Safelite in my 2000 FRC for two years. They installed new molding trim when it was installed. It has sand pitted pretty badly. Has anyone else seen this as an issue? I have a couple of rock chips in mine and need to replace it again. Are there any windshields which would stand up to interstate cross town driving better than Safelite? As far as leaks, it did leak when I first had the windshield installed, but it turned out to be the utters needed cleaning. Leak stopped.

Are you saying that if I add the thicker windshield weight + the larger rear glass weight of a standard Coupe together it's only going to weight 7.5#'s more then adding the thinner windshield + the smaller rear glass of the Z06 ?
