Default Cam Choice

I know this can bring quite a few opinions so I would love to hear everyones. Im looking to upgrade the cam in my Z and wondering a good choice to go with here are my goals

1: AutoX/Roadracing with the occasional blow the dude in the mustangs door off in town
2: still pass smog (gotta be able to pass the sniffer here in Cali)
3: not buck too much under 1500 rpm
4: Leave a little room to grow when i finish up doing heads, headers and intake.
5: a nice good lope to it as well

Spend a couple of days on YouTube and listen to as many cams as you can. Find a few you like then come back to the forum and you'll get better info then. It's so hard to recommend a cam when you don't know what your looking for.

I believe a 224/228 duration is about as big as you can get away with in Cali and still pass emissions. There's some good known tuners in Cali, might want to pick their brains as they'll be able to tell you exactly what you can get away with and what to expect performance wise.

You really don't want much, if any more cam than a stock z cam if you are into autocross and road racing. The problem is what when the engine comes "on the cam" it will break the back tires loose and you will find yourself looking out the side windows at where you are going.

In autocross you already have enough power to spin the car if you get too deeply into the throttle, since you very rarely get out of second gear, and this is coming from someone who is using Hoosiers already. Even if you are on R compound tires there isn't much that more power is going to buy you. There was a recent post on the autocross and road racing forum comparing a car with a lot of mods to a stock car and the time difference was only .6 seconds. That tells you a lot about what mods are worth.

You need the power to come on smoothly as you are exiting the corner in both autocross and road racing, and that is far more important than just a peak power number. Drag racers can use a lot more cam than road racers for that simple reason.

Headers and some head work are fine if it helps high end breathing, but grip and corner exit speed are a lot more important to lap times than pure power. Look at how fast a lot of cars with a lot less power are if they have more grip...

And lastly, the mods you make to suspension keep giving performance for years, very little upkeep other than tires. The C5Z is pretty hard on valve springs already. If you go bigger on a cam you are asking for reliability issues if you do much track work.

My cam results may be of interest to you. You can still go a bit bigger than this while passing the sniffer.

Where do you live? If you plan to have a performance shop do the tuning for you, you're best bet is to speak with them first to see what they've had luck with in the past. And if they're a decent shop, they'll have more experience than just about any of us responding to this thread.

Our CCP Stage 2 will fit the bill, 226/230 on a 114+2. It will drive really nice, pass emissions and make an easy 410+.

Right now we have cam kits on sale from $689 shipped ( cam, .660 lift dual springs, pushrods ) or cam only for $389.
