Looks like it blew one cylinder. Shop did a preliminary exam and says cylinder walls look ok but piston is shot. They want $600 to remove oil pan and check below for a better idea. If not bad they could replace the one cylinder. If it is not ok they recommend a crate LS6 (3yr,100K warranty) for around $8,000
Any ideas what they are going to find??
If the bottom is not to bad, my first thought is to replace the one cylinder BUT what about the remaining 7. I might be penny wise and pound foolish here.
$600.00 just to look, while maybe a fair price, seems to be penny wise and pound foolish to me. I would have to decide what I wanted as the final outcome. Would I be satisfied with the cost/benefit of repairing just one hole if that was an option? I didn't think there were any LS6 crate engines out there anymore unless your speaking of re-manufactured.
The motor needs to come out. You could send the bottom end to a good engine builder and have it rebuilt with new rods and pistons if the crank and block are good.
Or sell your motor and buy one from GM, not sure if they have any LS 6's anymore. Maybe a LS3.
Good luck
I'm a little confused on what exactly happened - did you drop a valve? You say the shop wants to charge you $600 to pull the oil pan - have they removed the valve covers yet to check the springs and valves?
If the block is OK, I'd look into rebuilding it as a 383. If the block is shot, I'd think about swapping in a LS3.

Was on way to work yesterday morning. Running 70-75 on Turnpike. Engine shuddered and quit. Pulled off to side of road. Called tow and took to shop. They did an inspection by removing plug and used a ligh camera to inspect cylinders. One had a bad piston but they said they could see no scarring on the cylinder. They want to pull the bottom and see what is going on there. We are meeting today at 4:30 to get further info and try and decide what to do.
If motor is not worth fixing they are recommending a Jasper Rebuilt LS6 with a 3 yr,100k warranty. Evidently this is a complete engine but not sure, will find out this afternoon
If you rebuild or replace the motor has to come out so why spend $600 to pull the pan just to inspect. I would pull, disassemble and then decide. Of course $$$ have a lot to do with your choice.

Thanks for the replies
Bet you broke a spring and dropped a valve.....How many miles on the car and have the valve spring been replaced?
Not sure why you would go through all the work to pull the pan. They just need to start by pull the valve cover first, they are probably going to find a broken valve spring on that cylinder and a dropped valve. That is a very common killer of LS6's. It seems in most cases when a valve drops in the LS6 and cracks the piston it does major damage to the cylinder wall, which is often not repairable. $8k for a rebuilt LS6? If you need to replace it I would look in the for sale section here. You can find a good low mile LS6 for less than half that. Let us know how it turns out for you.
The car has 98,000 and cylinder #7 is the culprit.
We got them down to $7100 for complete install. We are pushing to get the car fixed as this is the only car we have for getting back and forth to work.
But do they know what actually happened? Did you blow a piston ring? Drop a valve? It's highly unusual for a cylinder to just sporadically disintegrate.
At least pull the valve cover and have a look at the springs. I just had my cam go bad and am having a 383 built for under $5500 with everything included. The only down side is I haven't had my car for about 3 weeks. Good luck with what ever you do.
Consider calling Mark @ Vettenutts , He has a fairly low mile Z06 engine for a reasonable price, or at least he did a week or so ago. It would be fairly complete and you would still have your old engine to repair/sell to offset the cost of the replacement engine. Just a thought.
