Default What general maintenance do you do?

I never done my own work on cars but would like to do some minor maintenance to my car every once in awhile. Plus, good maintenance keeps the Vette going strong.

So I'm asking everyone, what do you do daily, weekly, or monthly to your Vette?

Thanks,
Jack

Wash and wax it. Especially the wheels as the brake dust can corrode the wheels.

I follow the maintenance schedule described in the Owners Manual. As far as car care, that's as diverse as the owners.

Wash it regularly, detail it quarterly, change the oil once a year.

Change oil once a year? Seems a bit long. Why is that?

Depends on how much you drive it and how hard you drive it.
I drive maybe 4K/yr...so It gets changed once a year.
Our cars have oil life monitors, change your oil when it gets to 0%, or once a year, whichever comes first.

From the owners manual:

Engine Oil Scheduled Maintenance
Change engine oil and filter as indicated by the
Engine Oil Life System@ (or every 12 months,
whichever occurs first). Reset the system.
Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know
when to change the engine oil and filter. This is
based on engine revolutions and engine temperature,
and not on mileage. Based on driving conditions,
the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can
varv considerablv. For the oil life system to work
properly, you must reset the system every time the oil is
changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary. A CHANGE OIL SOON message will come
on. Change your oii as soon as possibie within the
next two times you stop for fuel. It is possible that, if you
are driving under the best conditions, the oil life
system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary
for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter
must be changed at least once a year and at this time
the system must be reset.

Anyone who follows the oil life monitor and changes it when it gets to 0% is asking for trouble. It was published by GM that the oil life monitor should be secondary to the regular maintenance schedule. I've dumped oil (Mobil 1) out from vettes with under 3000 miles on them that should have been dumped a long time ago... blacker than black and dirty. It all depends on your driving habits. If you drive like a grandma and less than 5k miles a year, once a year is fine. If you drive the car hard you should do it much sooner. Personally I change the oil right before I store it for winter, in the spring/summer after I put 1k-2k miles on it I will change it again. If I track the car it gets changed right before the event. If I put on 3k miles during the summer I change it. So for me it varies, could be 2 oil changes a year, could be 3 or 4.

Yes and no. Some of what you say is true, such as that it depends on how you drive the car and the conditions under which you're driving. But for the everyday normal driver who doesn't race their car, changing it at 3K or 5K miles is a complete waste, and it has been proven by members who have sent their oil to blackstone for analysis when the oil monitor reaches 0% and almost 10K mile intervals.
This topic = and usually ends when blackstone results get posted.

I do anything the car needs at any given time; I enjoy working on things. The only think I will have worked on is the motor next year hopefully, and that is because I will attempt to add a few ponnies from the bottom up.

Keep it clean, change the oil, spark plugs as needed - basically minor stuff. For any other mechanical work, I have been taking it in to the dealer for that service, but now that the car's extended warranty is expired, I have a feeling I'll try and do more myself.

Have had the car a little over a year. When we first bought the car with 32,000 miles on it I paid to have all the fluids changed. It has since had one more oil change which paid to have done. Also had a passenger window regulator changed out. Which I paid for. So I 'd have to say none.

Since I've had mine on July of this year, I've done my own oil change, wash/wax weekly. Changed out the clutch fluid in reservoir (ranger method). I've done the anti venom mod etc. Anything I feel I can do on my own I research and make the attempt to get done myself.

I'll do whatever needs to be done short of machining parts that I don't have the equipment to do. I'm quite happy to buy a one-purpose tool if the repair needs it. I love working on my car! Plus it's always a good time to clean those hard-to-get-at places with a bunch of parts off the car!

Honestly, if you're somewhat mechanically inclined, it's really not that hard. Most things are bolted or clamped on. I bought a Factory Service Manual that shows everything but I've found most of the help right here on the forum. There are so many tutorials complete with pics and/or videos that everyone can follow. Try it!

PS - Anti venom mod - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...procedure.html

The anti venom mod pretty much a "modification" that's is done to reduce the notch feel on an aftermarket short throw shifter.
It's basically adding a copper washer to a deten plug on the transmission. You can read the procedure at toquez06.com
