Default C5 Radios

My parts book (2002 edition) shows two part numbers for the AM/FM/CD radio. #16257601 for '97 to '99, and #09390211 for '00 to '02. I'd like to know what the differences might be? Can either be used in a '99 Vette?

Will be interesting to see if the newer radio is just a plug and play in the older cars.

Some C-5 radios have a CD player some early ones have a cassette deck.

aftermarket radio install is pretty simple if your not going double din.

Who told you it was a hassle?

To explain a little further - I recently purchased a '99 Vette which has a JVC radio installed. I want to convert back to the factory original radio. I know that may sound a little strange, but I actually like the look of the OEM unit. In checking the parts book, I noted that there were two numbers listed for the AM/FM/CD radio. One for '97 to '99, and one for 2000 and later. Does anyone know what changes were made in the later model radio? FYI - I'm an electronics engineer, and have no problem dealing with automotive electrical systems. I just want to be sure that there are no issues with installation of a later model radio in my '99 Vette.

The early cars had cassette players. I gave my CD version from my 02 to a friend and it was a plug and play replacement for his cassette version.

I am with you. Although the factory deck sucks, it doess have a cleaner look to it. If not stock, double-din is the next best option.

If you retain the Bose Amp the install is trivially simple. Theres like 4 bolts that hold the center console down, and then like 2 torx screws that hold the radio bezel. You could do the job in an hour provided you've done a radio install before.

I know from experience with these stock units..ALL model years are completely interchangeable as long as they are C5 units. Many other GM cars and trucks have an identical appearance from the outside, but they will not work in the C5. So, you need to be sure any unit you buy on ebay is from a C5, not from a Silverado, or some other GM product. And, there are 2 versions of each (tape and CD) that will either play a rear mounted CD deck or not. The connectors on the back of the unit will reveal each setup. There is a small connector for the wires that run to the rear CD unit. I know of at least 5 part #s for the HUs over the years...and I have several of them for spare parts and misc. projects.

There are actually 3 screws. Remove the ash tray, you will see one there. Then, just to the left of the ashtray you will find another screw. Remove the blank insert left of the key cylinder and you will find the third screw. Removing the radio is no big deal. If you get the factory radio, it is plug and play. Easy install.

1. Lift the center console lid. Remove the two nut covers at the rear of the compartment and remove the nuts. Remove the insert with the "active handling" option. Remove the two nuts. Now, remove the console compartment. Disconnect all of the electrical. It is plug and play.

2. Remove the ash tray. Unscrew the torque screw. Just to the left of that screw, you will find a second torque screw and remove it.

3. Just to the left of the key cylinder you will see a blank insert. Remove it and then unscrew the screw.

4. If you have a stick shift, remove **** and then the boot. (I have a stick shift.)

Now, you should be able to remove the entire radio forward portion of the console and radio bezel to have access to the radio.

Here is a link for installing HUD. If you follow along, it will tell you how to remove the console.

I think he's talking about compatibility of different model year stock radios, not the actual mounting locations or fit. Note his comments about different part numbers.

not really entirely true

I have seen some cars only having two
The one behind the ash tray was sometimes never put in
But
as you pointed out there can be three

Well, chalk this one up to the 66% of those that did. The guy at the factory who worked the third shift must have been a little more conscientious with my FRC. Would you like me to post up a picture?

I am not saying yours does not have three
I was saying that what you posted about 3 screws is not entirely correct.
SOME have 2 is what I said.
