I put a Red Top in my '00 and it served me well for 7 years - at that point I sold the car and the battery was still good. When I bought my '03, it had a Red Top already in it and when the battery just passed the three year period, it developed a bad cell and had to be replaced. Went with a Sears DieHard Platinum and have not had any problems in three years.
Seems like anymore it is a hit or miss proposition with Red Tops in these cars.
Going on year 7 with a red top in my 84 TA. Great battery. The C5 has the issue like already mentioned (draw). But like it or not, its there, so another battery is probably best for these cars.
i have one in my 78. sometimes it will sit for a couple of weeks without being started and it hasn' t ever failed me. i had the first one for 5 years when i replaced it. with the battery inside the car i wasn't happy with the prospect of having an acid battery and the fumes right behind my seat. fwiw i wouldn't hesitate to replace my c5 battery with an optima when the time comes.
I have one in my 98, and read all the warnings. Guess what they are true. If you let tge car sit for two weeks it will be dead. One week and I am ok. Otherwise I keep it on a CTEK.
