I have several repaired paint chips on the hood of my Speedway white 01 C5 that stand out because the repairs don't match the factory colored paint.I purchased a Dr chip repair kit but I am hesitant about using it.The chips would need to be sanded as they have been raised by the previous repair method that was done before I owned it.Would it cost much to have this done at a auto paint shop?Or does anyone have any suggestions that will help me clean up these chips?
Thanks for any help
Fred
Depends how bad/big the chips are and how many there are. If they're not too bad a shop is most likely just going to fill them with touch up, then wet sand them down level with the rest of the paint, then polish. If they're many and bad it might be easier to just have the hood resprayed. Could range anywhere from $100-150 for touch up to $200-350 for respray....the latter costs more, but also has a better result.
That being said, I have heard great things about Dr. Chip so if you feel confident give it a try. Lots of tips and advice in the paint and body section.
I bought Dr Color Chip last year for mine and I am luke warm on the results. Not as good as the video for sure. If you are looking for perfection, go elsewhere.
I was hesitant also, but finally got up enough ***** and used Dr. Colorchip on a couple of minor scratches and chips on my '66. The color matched perfectly and the results were not so good as a body shop, but better than leaving the chips the way they were- and at a considerably lower cost. Don't expect to get it perfect with a $59 fix.
Thanks for the input. I feel reluctant to do any sanding on my hood and the few[4-5]chips that I do have are pretty small.I just want my vette to be as good as it can be.

I have done alot of chip fixes using several methods with a spray can and/or brush with great success. This would only cost you about $20 dollars. If you are not happy, you can always take it to a professional to fix. I can tell you how to deal with the old fix without sanding the original paint and how to fill in the area. It is too much to try and easily explain in written words. You are welcome to email me with your phone number and I can explain over the phone. BTW, I also have painted several show cars I have so I have a lot of experience.

I'm like you - Dr. Color Chip may make the color blend in, but it didn't do anything to remedy the hole in the painted surface. Ten years ago I used the Langa chip repair kit, and was happier with it's results, althoughed all it contained was a wax remover and rubbing compound. Langa's "secret" was their methodology: using a credit card sized piece of plastic wrapped inside soft cotton cloth, soaked with rubbing compound, to blend the paint blob into the surrounding surface.
Now I simply use the Langa "method" but not their product. At least it seems to work.
One other thing you may consider. If there is a used car lot in your area that you have confidence in, you can see if they use a service for paint touch-up and detailing. It's not a perfect soluction but it could get you more time until you have to look at something more expensive.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
