My 01 had the ring issue. But had all the service records, indicating that it had been resolved which was nice. Mine does leak a bit out of the diff. About 3 drops if I park it in the garage for a week.

I have an 01 Z, 45,000 miles, no oil consumption issues and no leaky diff. Build date is 4/01.

No problems here in my 01Z besides a sensor busting and spilling all of my oil out at work... it was a 25$ part though. It doesn't consume oil or leak out of the diff but who knows if it was repaired or not.

Edit: 125K miles and counting BTW

So far my 03/01 built 01 has no leaking diff, and as far as I had heard that problem was not just for the 01's.

If it was just for the 01's, why did my Amsoil connection (subdriver) who has an 02 tell me about what he does to fix his?

As far as the valve float issue, i'm pretty sure my car REDLINES at 6500, so I would not worry about valve float above redline.

My 01 Z has been awesome, there may be some turds around, but my experience has been positive so far...love the car.

I do not believe that the left axle seal leak only pertains to 01 Z06s. I know I've had to change mine more times than I can remember. That said, mine is a very early 02, bought in Aug 01. Really don't think they changed the diff housing though, so after changing the axle seal once with whatever version of the seal GM sells, I'd think my seal would be common with the full production run.

I had an '01 for a dd for a couple years..and it was great. I don't think you can really appreciate the hp difference between years....so I would just look for the best overall deal on the nicest Z from whatever year.

If this is true then I probably will. The leaky ring issues concern me a bit as I am a road racer.

There is not much difference performance wise, Main difference is the the 02-04 C5Z's cam is slightly larger. I made 367 RWHP in my 01 Z06 with just a CAI and Borla Catback. Thats 15whp more then 02-04's make.. I put those numbers down right after a CAI/Catback 08 C6Z put down 455 RWHP....

2. Transmission forks upgraded: unless you plan on modding transmission would want to think about this. I will tell you that the stock transmission holds up to alot in the 02-04. I presently have 600whp and transmission is fine.
3. value: an 01 will never be worth as much to a buyer in the future no matter how close they are
4. From my personal experience, 01's were beat on pretty hard, meaning the owners pushed them hard. Just my experience though.

I owned an 02 before the present 04.
1. suspension-the shocks were changed in the 04 and I don't know about others but the difference is substantial when pushing hard. That said, you can always change the shocks to newer ones.

Bottom Line: I say get an 02-04 for value reasons and because the have a stronger transmission that wont need to be upgraded unless pushing serious power beyond 600whp or so.

Uhhhh 01-04 Z06's have the same M12 T56 transmissions, Same as the CTS-V's and same as the 04-06 GTO. Same everything. Only difference is they changed the clutch preassure plate slightly in 02 to have a little more clamping power and they added a 3rd and 4th gear steel shift fork in 04. I have to disagree with everything you said about value lol... Also where are you getting that all 01 Z06's were beat on hard? That doesnt even make sense lol...

Also for those who dont know already very few early production 01 Z06's in the summer of 2000 had minor oil consumption problems that match that of a LS2 because of Piston ring flutter with constant abuse over 4K RPM. The later production runs fixed that problem and most of the early run Z06's had it fixed under warranty via TSB. Also There has been a lot of 02-03's that had Valve spring failure do to crappy springs... Also everyone rants about the 02-04 Sodium filled valves in the 243 heads, Most dont know that most 01 Z06's with a production date of 03/01 and later got this upgrade as well. No difference between the non sodium filled valves performance wise. Ask any LSX builder!!!

Oil consumption on 10% of 2001 Z06.. Valve spring failure on 3-4% of 2002-2003 Z06.. Numbers are very small when you look at the total of units produced.. I did some extensive research on my own and posted it about 3 years ago. The 2002-2004 have a bigger camshaft for more power.. Here is a great web site for info on all Corvettes,, this link shows the difference between 2001 and 2002 http://corvetteactioncenter.com/spec...l#.UPOJt2f_2Tw

Check this link out too.. http://www.corvettemuseum.org/specs/2002/z06.shtml

The MN12 did not get a steel 3-4 fork until late 2002/early 2003. Yes the 04-06 GTO and 04-07 CTS v's have the same MN12 but they did come with steel fork since change happened late 02/ early 2003.

the steal shift fork, does not make the tranny hold more power...

it just less prone to bending when the DRIVER is over shifting the car (SLAMMIGN THE **** OUT F THE SHIFTER).. does not have ANYTHING to do with the trannsision holding power.

Of course this is true....

Just saying that given the strength of the standard transmission, no upgrade is needed unless going way beyond power wise. Given this premise, the difference between the two is steel shift forks which was an upgrade.
