My car broke down on the way to work today. I was cruising along at 65 or so and the car started to miss. Not a full "cylinder not firing" miss but definitely rough (I could feel it in the shifter). The check engine light started to blink - it was already on because of a recurring 1416 code. I pulled off the interstate and thought it was going to die at a red light. It is waiting to be towed.
I feared the cats were going bad because of bad gas mileage ~18 and occasional rotten egg smell.
So, do y'all agree that it could be the cats? Or, something else?
If it is the cats, is my best (most affordable) option a non-catted x-pipe? I would love to do long tube headers but that is not really in the budget.
He quoted at 13 hours. I am trying to figure out which pump/tank setup my car has since I think it is an early '03 model.
I have a January 2003 Z06 and so far, except for the ABS, rear end leakage, trans solenoid, warped dashboard, window regulators on both windows, worn out leather under waranty, bad steering rack, no other major problems with 58K miles. Good yob GM!
Yeah thats rediculous I had Virginia Speed here in (obviously) Virgina quote me a couple hundred and a discount price on an aftermarket high flow pump.
2500.00 are you sure he did not accidentally add a 0 after 250? Bro their is an acces panal in front of the rear tire that:
you take off and BAM there is the fuel hat.
unplug
unbolt
insert new pump
bolt it back down
plug it back in
turn the key on and listen.. while your at it add an inline fuel pressure guage.

That's crazy, you could buy a super fuel system and have change left over.
Fuel pump is in drivers side tank. Drop aluminum cover and you have direct access to pump. I would also check the fuel filter first to see if it's clogged it's located back on the drivers side.
Your cars DTC can get you your codes. Do a forum search.

I took it to another shop today - it sounds like it has a big cam in it. Still no smoke. Guy did mention that the motor sounded like it had a lot of noise. I told him that LS6s normally had some noise. He assured me that he had driven hundreds of them, that his motor guy builds hotrods, and not to worry. We shall see.
If you have the newer FFS fuel system, getting the pump replaced is major $$. You can tell by looking for RPO code FFS or by looking under the car near the rear driver-side tire. If you don't see the bulk-head for the pump.....you have new(er) style fuel system
Does this sound like a fuel pump to you guys? The first guy said it was running 5 psi and therefore was the fuel pump. On 5 psi would the car run? Would the car throw cylinder misfire codes for a bad fuel pump?

You need to pull the codes. Someone with a Tech2 can tell you what cylinders misfired. You have to have a P0300 code in the DTC since that is the code for misfiring. A tech2 will tell ya which cylinder by adding a 1 to 8 (i.e. P0302) means cylinder 2.
You need to go to a shop that specializes in LS motors and not some rinky dink shop.
I would hope no smoke is coming out of it, as that has nothing to do with the a fuel problem.
Where are you located ? Maybe someone from the forum could help you. I doubt it is fuel pump if you can start the car it is running.
Since the latest mechanic said your motor was noisy, I would pull the valve covers and check your valve train (i.e. rockers, push rods and springs), these motors have a tendency to break these and you wind up with the problems that you're having.

I wanted to pull the codes yesterday, but I could not get the car moved until 4:30 and I was not going to keep the manager there longer then he wanted to stay on a Friday afternoon.
While I like the first guy I took the car to, I think that he was leery of tearing into the LS6. The shop that has it now is very reputable and I think they can find the cause.
The car has always had some noise up top, but, from my readings here and on other sites, I think it is in the acceptable range.
I will report back here with the newest findings (and hopefully not the news that I am having it towed home to raise funds).
