I've retained them on both my C5 and the C6, but I've never had to buy new run-flats on either of them. Given the cost of run-flats vs non run-flats, I think I would forgo the more expensive tires and risk a flat tire....haven't had one in 20 years. Certainly would carry a flat tire repair kit.
When I switched from Goodyear run flats to Michelins (the government bought these for me since their military base entrance tire spikes were faulty and ruined at least a thousand sets of tires including mine) the difference in noise was immediately noticeable and the ride improvement was awesome.
