After building only 15 Aztec Gold [RPO 58U] 1998 C5 Corvettes, the Color was discontinued. Problems with the paint made it impossible to continue production. It Appears they built 5 in a row, then took a break, then they built 5 more, then another break...and then the last 5 were completed.....

Speculation is they were "ADJUSTING" the PAINT FORMULA....It is said:
"No Two Aztec Gold C5's LOOK ALIKE" ....In other words the Various Body Panels OF THESE C5's DO NOT MATCH VERY WELL!!! BUT, COLLECTORS LOVE THAT!!!

I saw one a few days ago # 2, it is at Corvettes of Houston on I45.
They said they stopped making them due to the paint on the body and doors would't match the fenders. I could hardly tell the difference. 44k.

last year there was one for sell at a local dealer. Uglyest C5 I have ever seen, but someone finally bought it after sitting on their lot for 2 months.

Roscoe, it's Mike. Don't get on here as much as I used to, but saw this post and wanted to let you know I still have it and it looks as good as the day I bought it. You took great care of it and it leads a very pampered life now. Took it to Hot Springs show this year to see my friends at the Central Arkansas Corvette Club and it was a great trip. It was specially featured inside with last year's show winner and got a lot of looks. That is an awesome show in a scenic location with a friendly host club. Car was in Corvette Enthusiast several years ago. PM me, I'd like to catch up with you.

For all the faults it may come with, that is one beautiful C4- Funny how that platform gets in your veins- If you've ever owned one you know what I'm talking about... More trouble than anything, especially if you've ever done real maintenance on one, but still... What a personality...

Well, it's really in the eyes of the beholder. But admittedly, the color seems to be one that's either loved or hated, with very little opinion in-between...

Regarding the Aztec Gold color on the C5, I just can't warm up to it at all, rare as it is. I remember many, many years ago, early 70's, MOPAR came out with a PINK Cuda/Challenger. Very few made/sold as most guys didn't want the flak from their buddies that would come with the purchase of a pink performance car. As the decades have rolled by those very rare pink MOPARs have skyrocketed in price. Perhaps those Aztec Gold C5's will follow suit. Time will tell! Best wishes to all!

Step right up. Any takers?
Gold with black interior and even comes with factory installed Z06 brake ducts, Z06 screens, and a slew of signatures in the engine bay. It could be yours for the mere cost of $115,000.

That's not one of the Aztec Golds. We have one of the 3 Aztec Gold convertibles (the one that was Will Cooksy's demo) but the car in the picture is 50th Anniversary Gold from 2003 and it's a one of one. It's the only 50th Anniversary Corvette painted in Anniversary Gold and the car is signed by every employee at the factory at the time. Very cool car!

You're part right. It wasn't discontinued as it had never been intended for production. The purpose of those cars was to test the paint since they wanted to do the 2003 50th Anniversary Edition in gold but needed real world testing of the color which is why these cars were built and driven by executives as demos. The color was never available to order from the public. The problems you state above are the reason the color wasn't used on the 2003s and they used 50th Anniversary Red.
