Hi, Like everything else we all have differance opions. Regarding 2004 C5 Z06 shifters. There are Hurst, B&W, MGW, they all pretty much claim 30 to 35% shorter throws, is that also the same for the stock C6 Z06 shifter? And do you have to change the shifter box like MGW requires?
Thanks,
Bill
I'm making the switch on my short shifter to an MGW. After reading both sides of the argument, i rather play better safe than sorry. So i will be replacing the shifter box on my C5 Z06 when i do the shifter swap. I've driven my buddies C6 Z06 and i can say the shifts are smooth and precise but only a tad shorter than a stock C5 Z06 shifter. But as you stated above it's all based on personal preference on what goes into one's car. I'm just waiting on my custom made C6 **** to arrive and i'm ready to rock and roll.
My z06 has 35k miles, i changed the shifter box when i installed the shortened c6 tps shifter with a new gm.
Two months later i switched to a hurst just because i wanted to see if they were different....if they were it wasnt by much.
Two months after that switch i purchased the mgw and their version of the shifter box. The mgw appears to be the same design as the gm maybe cleaned up a slight amount around the casting marks.
The Mgw is nicely machined but i would not say its leaps and bounds over the other two mentioned. There was not a noticable difference in the shifter box either. The mgw and hurst were both more precise shifters when rowing through the gears.
In the end it all comes down to matter of opinion.
After plenty of research I went with the MGW. I say money well spent. I heard plenty of people bash hurst and the c6 shifter swap. I haven't heard anything bad about MGW. They only recommend you change the shifter box out. This is only because the old rubber bushings can become dry and fall to pieces, but the z06 doesn't have these bushing. It is hard mounted into place. I just swapped stock shifter with the MGW shifter. I haven't had any problems, no noise or excessive vibration. The shifter is really firm for a few hundred miles, but will loosen up. The shifts from front to back are a little shorter than stock, but the movement from side to side is crazy short. Im not sure about the other brands, but MGW's stuff is top notch!
My friend has no complaints with his B&M. Because its a Z06, the shifter box is already solid mounted so all ya do is bolt in the shifter. Took maybe a half hour to install.

you are mistaken about the shifter box. we do not even have our box out yet. the box you have is a GM unit. the shifter is an MGW but we have not released our billet box yet.

Stand corrected shifter box was purchased from TPS.
George,
When do you plan to release the billet box and what adavntages do you expect?
I replaced the stock Z06 shifter with an MGW and new GM shifter box. The difference is night and day.
As others have said, the MGW is TIGHT out of the box but loosens up nicely over a short period of time. It's a first class, well engineered piece of machinery and the installation instructions/video are as good as anything I've gotten from any manufacturer anywhere.
I don't think I'd even try anything else at this point.
Ive tried Kirban, B&M and stock. Then I tried MGW. I have had the MGW for a couple of years now and its the best so far. Do the shifter alignment procedure and the anti venom mod and it will be perfect.
