Default F55 upgrade?

Has anyone done an upgrade to the F55 MSRC from a car without?

If I got this all straight, then:
  • 1997-2002 had F45 as an option
  • 2003-2004 had F55 as an option (no need to upgrade if so equiped)
  • All base C5s came with FE3
  • Z51 was an option, but not sure if it could be combined with F45/F55?

So my basic question is if anyone has done an upgrade from one of these configurations to the F55? If so, is it easier to do the F55 upgrade to a car that already has F45?

I am formulating my buying strategy and am considering this as a requirement/nice-to-have.

All opinions welcome and wanted!

Many would consider the F45/55 a downgrade. If a 45/55 shock goes bad, its big bucks to replace. A lot of guys remove the system and replace with Z06 shocks, Bilsteins, etc.

That's good feedback, I've had two C5's one (new) with F45 which I did really notice a difference on New England roads/highways in tour mode, mostly on the bumpies, the other had the base suspension (FE3 I presume) which was just ok and wasn't horrible on RT93 jaunts, but left me wanting the F45 tour switch from time to time.

Its difficult to find a used C5 with F45/F55, so I'm going to purchase regardless, its about finding the right car for me. If I can't add F55 its not such a deal, but I do consider it desirable in my limited experience.

I am one of those folks that want the best of both, I have my honda DD but still want to a comfortable commute in the vette during the summer on the sometimes crappy roads.

Who knows, maybe I'd be happy with the Z06 shocks, but the ride control option is what I'm looking for.

I like my F55 but I could live without it if I had the F51 suspension. The F55 is just the fancy expensive computer controlled shocks added to the FE3 to my knowledge. Makes it a nice smooth riding cruiser, and with the flick of a switch you're ready for the twisties. I'm a gadget guy so I like that kind of thing.

I wouldn't put a lot of money into converting to the F55, I'm sure it would be expensive ($1500 minimum for the shocks alone), wiring harness, BCM, etc. Maybe if you could find a light roll total to part out, then again, you might be able to fix a light roll cheaper than doing the swap

jcgunn - sorry I can corroborate your assertion on the expense of the F45 replacement, have read many threads on that $$$. Not looking to replace F45 - looking to upgrade to F55 which from what I understand on the C6 forums are much better and more reliable (magneto fluid, etc).

That's the feedback I'm looking for, it sounds like a major mod rather than a swap out from F45 or FE3. I too am a gadget guy and really like the idea of the adjustable damping. In the end this isn't a DD so its not a huge point, but I'd pay extra for an F55 car for sure, and if it was anything like a HUD install on a C5/C6 I'm game as well, but BCM sounds like a big deal.

I like the F55 option too. Suits our driving style just fine.

We deal with people all the time that are trying to take the F45/F55
set up off their cars, never heard of anyone trying to add it to their car.

Most are replacing with this set up

If you're still in the process of searching for a car, I would bypass the $$$ F45/55 setups, and look for a car with a Z51 package. I have Z51 and non runflats on my car, and the ride is good, and the handling capabilities still far excede my abilities.

I have the F55..so far no issue and dont know what to do if they fail..have seen some low mileage used on e bay. My GF (and myself) really like the smooth ride these shocks provide, a world of difference. If I could afford would reinstall the F55's!!

Keep in mind that the C5 and C6 F55 shocks are not interchangeable.
