Within the last seven days, my headlights will not open or close on my 1998 C5. Noticed the problem during a trip home and lights just wouldn't open. When I open them manually lights still work fine. Don't have the time to do the work myself, and just wanted to know if (1) anyone else experienced same problem and, (2) what issues were discovered? Have no choice but to have it repaired at the dealer. Thanks
If you hear a grinding or whirring noise for about 3-4 seconds after you try to open or close, then its most likely the nylon gears in the headlight motor. You can fix it yourself in about an hour or so.
Manually raise the lights, remove the covers and shrouds and the motors are on the inboard side of the headlight. You can replace the gear with either nylon or brass ones. I would replace the gear in both right and left headlights, at the same time.
Do a search on the subject, on this site, and you'll find a couple of dozen "how to" threads. Just make sure you follow the directions.
