Default 97/98 questions

Hi Everyone,
I'm considering a C5 again - either later this year or early next year. I enjoyed my 99 but really didn't like the traction control, memory package and climate control.

I'm pretty sure that the 97's didn't have the traction control and thought that it was a mid-year introduction on the 98's. Is that correct?

Any other differences I should keep in mind?

Alot of people say that the 97 didn't have it idk because my 97 clearly has traction control!
And if you don't like it you could always shut it off other than that there pretty much the same as the 98-99

Maybe you're thinking of active handling?

Yes, active handling.

The system in mine could be turned off, but you had to do it each time you started the car which sucked. There were times I got sideways and it didn't activate, then other time when I wasn't sideways and it would come on, which basically just closed the throttle.

the active handling was much improved in 2001 when they went to the bosch 5.3 system.

i could have sworn that some of the earlier cars did not have active handling. i remember seeing ebcm's for the pre 2001 cars that were with and without active handling

Traction control has been on all C5's.

Active handling (code JL4) was an option from '98 to '00 with production volumes below.
'98 5356
'99 20174
'00 22668

A second generation active handling was standard on all '01+.

I have two '99's and neither one has active handling.

Both my "97's" had traction control. My "99" has AH and Traction control which I turn off immediatly when i start up. Can a tuner tune this stuff out so I don't have to keep turning it off?
I've had cars/hot rods all my life that had a lot more "beans" than this Vette has and I've managed without it so far! Heck, my wifes "55" will blow the doors off the vette [in a straight line] and she drives it like she stole it!

All C5s had traction control. It was Active Handling that came out mid-model year in 1998 and was an option up to the 2001 model year.
