The very fact that you are asking questions about the car tells me this isn't "the one." You're second guessing yourself because something doesn't feel right. As hard as it may be, walk away.

This purchase is not a need car but a want car. Look around and take your time to find THE CAR. It is hard to explain but you will know when you find "the one." It will look right (appearance and features) and feel right (runs well, drives well, and your gut doesn't question your mind). If you take your time to find this car, you won't be disappointed. Settle and you'll always question your purchase.

Two years ago, I bought a 168,000 mile Z06 that was /is mechanically perfect and cosmetically very good. I was able to confirm maintenance records at the original dealership. It appraised for more than I paid and it was thousands less than the asking price you're looking at. Be patient.

I checked out at least 30 Vettes before I found what I was looking for. Funny part is I didn't know I was looking for a Z06 until the day I pulled on the lot and I swear it had spot lights on it from the heavens above telling me to buy this car and that was before I got out of the truck. The car now has 192,000 miles and I wouldn't hesitate to drive a lap around the country in it.

I might sound backwards, but this one is actually pretty close! It drove great--sure, it may be ugly as I am, but I'm up for a project. I enjoy fixing things, and me in a beater car will not be me settling. The problem is, in a Carfax world, they're asking too much. One message I've learned in this thread is that it's a marked car, for life.

No reply at my $12k offer. Oh well.

.. I'm tempted to offer my services to them, to stand in as "Educated Corvette Buyer" in return for a different auction car at wholesale plus 3%. I'd be happy to explain what they'd have to do to sell the car--my impression is that they only know good ol' boy pickup drivers, and that they've priced it to snag a clueless impulse buyer. "Well, I showed up for a TRUCK but I done bought this here Bad-A** VETTE instead!!" ... I know this C5 has been sitting on their lot for at least a few months. Just don't want to get them all excited that I'm still nibbling or something. Maybe this idea only makes sense if I knew a specific auction car... (which I don't, nor do I know how to find one)

Thoughts? Are any win-win experts reading?

Anyway, I appreciate the help. The search continues.
