I am the proud owner of a torch red "99" coupe. I bought this car in January and finally able to get it out of storage. It has 58,000 well cared for miles and is in immaculate shape. Now, only when first started cold, I hear a high pitched whistle from the motor area lasting only one to two minutes then ends abruptly. The temp. guage has not regestered any movement yet No leaks, no codes. It is very difficult to locate where it is coming from and does not do it after the first start. I am not really worried about it just curious.
Man, I love this car.

Thank you for the replies. Is this a need to repair problem?
I'm old school, the last vettes I had was a 1965 and a 1966 big block. I wish I had those back!
Not familiar with the "new" stuff yet.
Should I be concerned with this or just know it is a quirk of the car.
Thanks again.

It is normal, Don't worry about it as long as the air pump is what it is.
I don't agree that the high pitch whistle is normal. If it sounds like a jet engine type whistle, it means the pump is failing.
I agree that a failing / failed pump will not harm your engine. AIR stands for Air Injection Reaction and as stated previously reduces emissions at start-up while the catalytic converters heat up.
Don't be too quick to change the air pump. It could be just the tensioner pulley bearing. Your car has just about the mileage that they will start to make a high pitch noise at startup then go away. I would replace those first , they are fairly cheap and due to be changed anyway.
nah, we ain't going the Pink Floyd route! To clairify more about the "tune" the whistle is playing on my vette. As stated each time on a cold first start the whistle is a little over a minute in length. When the whistle stops it sounds like a valve is being closed the tone of the whistle goes up rapidly and then stops abruptly. I would think it is the air pump that is suggested. It is very faint and I can live with it. The previous owner had a Corsa exhaust installed and sounds great, now to put a Bob Seager cd in and I won't hear the whistle!
I am so proud of this car, it has been cared for and it shows. Even if it does have wagon wheels. I figure if and when everyone else changes wheels, mine will be different. LOL.
