I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but I put a hurst shifter into my 6 speed 03 and now any time I drive over 60 there is a very distinct whine in the car that goes away let I let off the gas. I did not install the shifter with the rubber bushings so could it be harmonics ? Has anyone else experienced this ?
I am going to change the trans and rear end fluids this weekend but I just thought I would throw this out there to see what you guys have to say
Thanks
Relatively common if you do a seach, and a short shifter will amplify the noise. It could be the rear, torque tube, or trans. Change the fluids out and go from there. Based on other threads its not something thats much of a concern, only an annoyance.
Check your wheel bearings. If that's not it, it's most likely the diff. A fluid change might make it go away, but that might just be treating the symptoms.
Cut some fabric out of an old white t-shirt, and strain the fluids through it when you drain them. This will catch any debris in there to let you know if something is broken.
You mentioned it doesn't happen until after 60mph. Have you verified that it does it in all gears past 60mph or only one gear?
My 98 also has a Hurst shifter and the exact same whine changed all fluids, checked wheel bearings, and the whine presists any other ideas would be appreciated, car only has 66k on it so I would think torque tube would be fine
