I have the RSD snap shifter, and just today noticed some vibration noise that goes away when I grab the stick.
So far, I have the Hurst ball removed, and that seemed tight. All other bolts appear hand tight if not wrench tight.
Should I try re-aligning the shift pin? Try driving the car with the console off to hear it better? Is this common? I have been using it with great service for about a year.
Thanks for your guidance. What kind of maintenance should I be thinking about?
Since this writing, I have pondered, maybe the internals are shaking and not anything in the bolt-downs. Should I be taking the shifter off of the housing to check out that ball and socket?
I'd unbolt the shifter from the box and see if by chance the plastic bushing is missing from the end of the shifter that goes into the pivot cup. If everything looks good then I'd call RSD and get there thoughts.
I have an RSD and there is NO noise...great shifter.
I took it apart tonight.
Everything looked great. No goop, just nicely machined and fitted parts.
So I started imagining what could move and make a noise. I took a wild guess, and tried a harmless experiment. The rod that attaches to the transmission can be shook, if you are extremely mean to it. So I replaced the base with the stocker. I still have the RSD short shift, but using the stock base. This is probably all just due to a loose coupling, but I just had to try replacing "something". I am not even suggesting the RSD piece wore out. The only real wear is the rubber bushing around the shifter. It's cracked all up where the rod hits it, and shouldn't be the way I granny drive, but that's not what this thread was about.
Oh.. I drove the car down the road and back, got out to get my wallet and tax refund check, drove it harder to the bank, let it idle for a while while I found out my bank machine refused the check, drove it real hard half way home, hit redline in second, got the shift light. Took off from a stoplight in first, revved out 2.5 gears, cruised in fifth the rest of the way, watched my coolant drop back to 158. Parked it, in my crowded driveway which means a lot of first and reverse. And it worked!
The shifting is actually notchier and stiffer now, so I think I may have it aligned better. The gears are engaging more completely ( just a guess ).
