It occurred to me that it is not common knowledge that catalytic converters are constructed of valuable precious metals that are worth big bucks to your local scrap yards. Forum member BarneyZ was trying to sell his for cheap in the parts section after a header install. I recommended he would get more from the recyclers and he just let me know they shelled out $130 for his old cats. One more reason to get those headers you have been thinking about!
I had an older Denali that I had to replace the cats on. There is Platinum in them If i'm not mistaken. I took them to our local scrap yard a couple years ago that I'm friends with the owner of. He gave me $95 for the set of 2 small cats total at the time. Prices of scrap metal vary GREATLY from month to month.
I thought they've been stealing them for a while. Fox news houston was reporting the victims were most often lifted trucks where there was lots of room to work.
I parted out an Explorer a couple years ago. When it came time to take the frame and body shell to the metal recycler, I took the two cats with me. Good money, but he said he could only buy one cat from a customer per day - apparently Ohio's way of curtailing theft. I just handed the second one to my buddy who was with me that day and had him cash it in for me.
