Default Replacement tire question

The rears on my AE need to be replaced but the fronts are almost new. Both are Goodyear run flats that were on the car when I got it. I want to put non run flats on the car but hate to replace the fronts since they're in such good shape. Are there any issues with running the combination of non-run flats on the rear and run flats on the front?

Red, I feel your pain! I have two sets of staggered(18s and 17s)for my BMW; fronts are good, rears are past the wear bar.

I'm looking at replacing the rears on the 17s and giving that a whirl.

Missed the part about mixing rft/nonrft. I wouldn't do it

I haven't heard of anyone mixing them, but I wouldn't recommend it. By their nature, RF's have very stiff sidewalls and the car would squirm, perhaps to the point of being dangerous.

Non RF's are much cheaper as well. You can probably pick up a full set for a little more than the price of 2 rear RF's.

I'd go for all 4
Also, if they are the original tires I'd be checking them for dry rot between the treads.

You could certainly try just putting 2 on the back. If you didn't like the handling, then buy the front ones also.

For what it is worth, I love my Continental ExtremeContact DW tires (non-run flat). Much, much quieter and much less harshness over tar strips.

When I bought my 99 6 months ago the previous owner had put on a new set of non run flat Goodyears. The rears needed to be changed so I had non run flat Goodyear Eagle F1 to match the fronts. Much quieter ride and smooth over road surface, as new tires are. No squirm even after 6 months. I did not feel a problem running mixed but I would suggest having all 4 the same. I like the non run flats, especially in the wallet.
