Default Double din

A newbie question (I'll probably have a few)
What does "double din" mean?

Call or send a PM to Dennis at Double D Mods. He can tell you all about Double DIN radios.

Double Din used in the context here refers to a 4 inch aftermarket radio. In the C5, the standard size radio, a Single DIN, is 2 inches wide. 4 inch radios have been very popular for the last several years because they support a nice sized video display screen which can be used for navigation, DVD watching, and convenient sized control screen for other audio/video sources. Given the capability of Double DIN head units, they are very desirable and discussed here often.

One important thing you should know is that the C5 corvette is not built out of the factory to support double din radios. In other words, installing a double din head unit is not a remove and replace operation the radio (head unit)... it requires customization of the cage that holds HVAC controls and the radio... Don't let this intimidate you. There are specialty head unit installers that can do it plus a wealth of people here who have done it as well.

As was noted above, forum vendor Double D Mods is great and can take care of you should you decide to go double din.

This is my first time messing with the new Kenwood units and I must say the new features are reall nice for this unit!

The factory Bose speakers will be kept so we will be using the pac roem-vet1 harness with this install.

ok some pics.

We started by removing the bezel

after the bezel is removed next comes the fun job of cutting out the support brackets for the install

using the roem-vet1 was pretty basic with a couple exceptions. For the most part you just need to follow the directions and match color codes wires.

some exceptions to know
1) the blue wire from the Kenwood harness will be connected to the blue/white wire from the roem-vet1
2) you will need to take the light green wire and ground it to the black ground wires for the bypass option.
3) the orange/white wire from the radio will connect to the yellow or cream colored wire on the bottom right or blue end of the havc control
red wire from the roem-vet1 will be run to the box in the footwell for power.
all speaker wires and others are like i mentioned color coded for easy to figure out connections.

pic of the hvac wire

pic of the wired Kenwood harness to the roem-vet1 harness

pic of the red wire(with an extentions to reach the footwell so its not actually red)

next step was to run the wire and antenna for the gps
we put this in the front windshield corner of drivers side

blue tooth for this unit was run up the to drivers side corner of the windshield

after all done with wiring comes test fit time of the new bezel.
head nit is set in place and tomorrow morning the hvac controls will get set in place and then button the rest up.

Couple snesak pics of the bezel in for test fitting.

Stay tuned for tomorrows end results and final pics if the install

Thanks for all the help. The links were good. I guess it will take a while to learn all the terms.
With my 02, the guy had installed a Pioneer radio/CD in the top slot and a Sirius radio in the bottom. He had to remove the lighter and ashtray from the bezel. I didn't like it so I got a stock radio CD player and I'm waiting for the bezel I have coming that has the lighter/ashtray in it. I got to wondering if it will fit after reading this.
