I personally wouldn't make a habit of folding them a lot of times. Eventually the internal parts can wear and then a repair is necessary. This might explain it for you. And I am not saying this will happen, it just is a possibility. I don't think I have folded my mirrors in more than a couple of times since I have owned the car.

Wow that was hairy! And I just did the passenger side to see if i could. After I popped it back and i'llnever do that again. I wash at my house, wipe down then garage.
Even better, the PO put black tape over the white part of my emblems fore and aft but I got it off!
how is folding your mirrors hairy?
that's how they shipped them from the factory. and like others have said, most of us flip them forward after we warsh the car to let the water drain out.
Apparently they've never been folded beyond original delivery; it seemed to take lots of effort to move it the first time. Folding back and the other direction got easier.
I can see where this might get too easy!
My passenger side mirror went loose on me a couple of years ago. I used super glue to hold it in place, but that didn't last long. I took it to the dealer to see if they could fix it. Nope, need a new mirror. I had never tried to fold either mirror.
The original intent of the "break away" mirror was for pedestrian safety. The mirrors give way if hit. It wasn't until later that "folding" mirrors became popular on trucks and SUVs to make getting into garages easier or allowing more room in parking spaces.
