Big Law Man,

How do you fix that exhaust jingle??
Replace the stock H-pipe portion of the exhaust with an aftermarket X-pipe.

Where can I find an X-pipe and are there any other benefits(or drawbacks) to this mod besides getting rid of the "jingle"

Thanks

No drawbacks besides the cost involved. You will probably increase your RWHP by anywhere from 5-10 ponies depending on what else you do to the exhaust. There are many diff manufactureres of X's out there. Magnaflow, corsa, basani etc. Check the CF mall for an idea on some of the pipes.

I've gotten to know my local service manager quite well. In 16 months the following items have replaced:

rings, injector wiring harness, 2 fuel pumps and relays, emergency flasher unit, PCM, rear axle seals.

All of this work (except the rings) was required in the last 6 months. BUT, despite all the repair work, I LOVE MY Z06!!! :yesnod: :)

I like my Z06, it is fun to drive, looks great, my kids call it the bat mobile. My Dad worked on the line for GM for 36 years. There is some heitage and emotion here. That said my total Z06 expierance is far below my expectation.
I bought one of the most expensive cars GM makes. I paid with a check. I was at the dealer for 2 hours to complete the transaction, that is ridiculous! Now that I have cleaned and polished my car myself I realize the dealer prep was minimal.

I have had several issues including, loose passenger seat, the infamous exhaust rattle, carpet unraveling, chipped door glass. Some are resolved others still pending. The most irritating is the exhaust rattle because it appears thar GM recognizes the problem and has not taken action. The fix is known, fix it!

I do not buy into to all the hype regarding reduced weight and higher performance for a higher purcahse price. The cam, exhaust, tire, break improvments appear ligitamate. The cabin is hot and loud, in my opinion, lacking necessary insulation. To me issues like this are more about manufactuer margin than performance.

I have watched my Z06 video a few times. The threads I read on this forum regarding GM's position on hard and competitve driving do not match up with the video. To me the video clearly positions the Z06 as a track ready automobile and states as much. I do not drive mine on a track but do not expect the issues I have had with a track ready automobile.

Most frustrating to me is the info I pick up from GM's Corvette Executives comparing Vette owner experiences as no worse than others (e.g. BMW, Porsche, etc.). I cannot agree with a, " we are no worse than others postion," on Corvette. The Corvette brand promise, heritage and product should be the standard, period, no excuses!

Recently many dealers, including mine, are drastically lowering prices affecting the value of my investment. GM could offer Z06 owners some type of value enhancement (e.g., special trade deal for 2003, upgrade sound system, additional rebate, etc.)

I enjoy the car, my kids love it, it is a uniquely American brand with great heritage. My other experiences cause me to seriously doubt the value I have for the amount of money I have invested.

A new car is not an investment. Its an expense and nothing more. If you were concerned so much about resale value, you should have leased it. The Z06 is a high volume American sports car - I fully expected it to depreciate significantly - I'm not surprised. Bottom line is I don't really care much about resale value as I intend to keep the car for a long time. What I do expect is that the car makes me happy for the long time that I do own it. And so far, it has lived up to that expectation.

OK then. Tell me one car that has equal or better performance to the Z06 and better quality for the same price or less. If you can't answer that then there is no better value.

This is a note to stingray 454 regading your comments on my post.

I answered a request posted by another forum member. I answered with my opinions. You obviously have different opinions. You stated those opinions as fact; they are not, they are your opinions.

When I pay 50k for a durable good I consider a portion of that an investment. You don't, thats fine; we have different opinions.

I disagree with you assestment of value. It appears that your only measure of value is performance. My definition of value includes, resale, performance, dealer expieriance, service, etc. To my mind Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Nisssan, Lexus, Saab all have certain models that compete very well with my Corvette.

Finally my negative comments regarding Corvette are all very fixable. I even offered some suggestions on things I would like to see done.

I apprecaite your position I hope you can appreciate mine. If not we have an honest disagreement. Have a nice day. :smash:

I brought my car in to the dealer for service for a few minor things:

- Wind noise above 60MPH near the rear part of where the driver's window meets the door. They 'adjusted' the window alignment, which fixed the problem on the ride back from the dealer, but now the wind has re-appeared. Looking closely now at the weatherstripping, it looks like theres a chunk of rubber missing from the door weatherstripping, like it was a manufacturing defect. Incidentally the weatherstripping is by far the worst I have ever seen on a car and is the only quality issue I've noticed. There's glue all over the place, uneven in some places, and the quality of the weatherstipping material looks really weak. Very sloppy job. BG needs to fire the weather stripping installer, IMO.

- I've heard an intermittent clacking/ticking sound from the engine that is louder than I've heard on any other Z06. Almost definitely a noisey lifter problem. Dealer says they couldn't hear anything abnormal from the engine  I was going to suggest they get their ears checked, but instead I decided to just let it be. At least I had it checked out - if the engine fails later under warranty, that's GM's problem, not mine. I've done my fair share by having it checked by the dealer.

- Exhaust jingle very annoying. I knew this was a 'normal' problem thanks to the forum and that there is no dealer fix for it, but I decided to let the dealer check it out anyway in the remote chance they could fix it. The dealer came back after trying to find the source (which they couldn't) and said it was a 'normal Z06 noise - cannot change - no known fix).

Next time I bring it in, I will have them replace the driver's door weatherstripping.

Overall though, I'm still pleased with the quality of the Z06. Just one minor quality issue/defect isn't bad for such a complex machine, IMO.
Apparently these are common issues. I've seen all the above items with my 2002 Z06 (including clutch/drivetrain vibration). The dealer tried to fix the exhaust and windnoise; no luck. All other issues stated as normal. There is a burning/smell after hard accel; possibly clutch slippage (perhaps related to vibration issue). Private mechanic states out of balance clutch; 2nd dealer is doing research. Only thing to do at this point is document these concerns and enjoy the car.

Hi
A newbie here. Just wondering, after all these stated defects & quality issues, do any of you regret getting the Z06?
Or is it a fair price to pay considering the level of performance you're getting?

No regrets. Other high performance cars have their share of issues. The C5/Z06 is a an excellent car.

I voted 1 trip and it was for my rear camber bolts loosening which is a problem under extreme load( ie: on the track) Other than that my car is perfect! Nice to just turn the key and really go!

My Z06 now has 12,000 miles. I've replaced the battery 3 times, the gas tank sensor once, and have complained about lifter/valve noise (which the dealer claims they can't hear but everyone else can). In addition the car uses about a quart of oil every 500-600 miles. At my next oil change the dealer is going to start an oil consumption test.

But, even with the problems I'm still very happy with the car. Yeah, I wish that the value was holding up a little better too, but I bought the car to have fun...and I have fun every time I drive it. I've probably got the best commute in the country (down the central CA coast road...lots of curves and little traffic in the morning!)

Heres my latest. While cleaning the car I cut my hand on the inside of the drivers door glass. There is a small chip out of the inside of the glass. It is so small about the only way to find it is to cut yourself on it. Took it to the dealer he ran it by GM. He claims GM's position is that I should have inspected the car closer before buying it. What a joke! When is the next chat session with Dave Hill? Better yet what is his E-Mail address.

I have had 3 warranty issues including the '02 ring update for oil burning on my '01 Z06 but all have been fixed to my TOTAL satisfaction by my dealer. :) :) :)

A lot of this is subjective and based on personal experience. If you have never had to take a new car back to a dealer in XX years, then any problems are going to be magnified. I've never had a car that DIDN'T have to go back several times. By that standard, the Z's better.

Nobody builds 100% perfect cars, but some people have better luck buying them than others. I haven't seen anything that suggests the Z is worse than other cars of similar sophistication and price. FWIW, IMHO, and YMMV.

Good luck man...

I had all the same problems with my 01 and a few others... The motor ended up being blown and they replaced it under warranty.

I got it back, it made a strange whistling sound starting out in 1st gear, and pulled to the left under accelleration with the new motor...

So rather than deal with Chevy any more I sold it and got a Porsche...

Sorry, It was a great car, just had too many unexpected/unnecessary visits to the shop for a new car... The Porsche isn't as fast, doesn't handle as well, but is really nice, and much better quality all around.

Mike

This problem developed for me the first time I had the car up to 140+. It was fine before then -- at around 140 it sounded like the door seal was compromised and has been noisy above 50mph ever since.. I'll have it looked at at the first service I guess!
