Default Modding my shifter

So I think I'm going to mod my existing shifter by cutting it down ( for looks and comfort. )

Can I just remove the shifter and cut about an inch or so off? Or will I need a tap and die set to create new threads?

I plan on going back with the "cue ball" ****, whether it be a Hurst or the one with the C5 logo on it.

It's only got about 1 1/4" of thread on it. I just got a new billet **** for mine, but I just plan on threading the new **** a little more. Sits up too high for me too.

I cut mine a total of 1 3/4". I also use/make shift ***** to allow one to grip way down on the shifter. I cut roughly 7/8' from the top, then removed the entire shifter, removed another 7/8 from the bottom. I also have 2 anti venom style washers in the rear. It works great, and I like it better than any other shifter including aftermarket. Someone here had done the lower cut-down, but I don't remember who. There are plenty of threads left on top.
Pix: before and after. The first **** is the same material, but different shape. One can see the change by focusing on the shift boot.
