My dic is off by 12% up against the old school add and subtract method. But that method isn't accurate either. With dual tanks and pumps its hard to duplicate full tanks each time.
If you really want a head scratcher try monitoring the obd2 stream and comparing it to your dic. You'd think the two would report the same.
my best ever was on a 5 hour trip across the state. state highways, 60mph limits for the most part but also runs through towns with stop lights. I reset the reading when I started off, and took a picture when I stopped in my driveway...reading 35.7.
Approximately 5 hours driving on that calculation.
I have never seen it that high before or since, but 33 frequently, 34's a few times (2+ hour drives)
My best was after about a 200 mile trip when I filled up the average was 36.1 mpg calculated by the miles/gallons at fill up. The DIC showed an avg 37.7 for that trip. On that trip I was purposely trying to get good mileage so the cruise was set just over the speed limit at about 56 or 57 mph.
My normal mix of driving is mostly highway and my avg mpg on the DIC stays just over 29 mpg, but at fill up calculations it is more like 27 to 28 mpg.
My car is a '99 6 speed with intake and longtube exhaust mods with a HPtuners tune. It is amazing just how good these cars can run and still get economy car mpg's.
