Hey guys. Before I go buy this 2002 z06 with 39k I have to ask. Is 6-7 times at auto x events "a lot" and bad for the car's longevity or is my friend just over worried? Buying car in 24 hours. Let me know your thoughts!
Is it stock? Or was it setup for autox? Also, you are referring to the timed/coned event usually held in large parking lots, right?
Aside from tires and brakes, I would be concerned with tranny fluid...if it was changed regularly a few times through out all the events. Check the clutch reservoir, if it black and murky, chances are the tranny fluid wasn't changed.
autocross isn't really that hard on cars, nothing like road racing. with autocross the clutch and wheel bearings are the major stress items on the frame.
Clutch is used at the start and one shift, I can't think of a track where a C5Z would ever leave 2nd gear. Nothing to hit, its all 30-80mph and not hard on a chassis like a Z...
car was a bust guys. flew to San Jose to see it, it looked terrible from the moment he pulled up. He only had full slicks on the car and he had racing harness and go pro camera mount installed. PASS. not to mention the bad vibes he gave off. Anyway, im still on the hunt, looking at a 2003z in central oregon, 29k miles, it came from the south via a few dealer auctions. first owner 1 year, 2nd owner 1 year, this third owner almost 7 years of ownership. Im feeling good about this one. meeting him tuesday with $ in pocket. were at $23,000
Keep looking for a good deal. I got lucky and found one 20 miles from my hometown, and had a buddy check it out (I'm deployed). Everything checked out, flew in another friend to pick it up and it's now sitting waiting for me while parts boxes pile up. Good luck. And if you can afford to fly to go check one out, you should have no problem finding a good one in your price range that hasn't been beaten on.

Don't know where your located, but I spent about a year using Craigslist, Sellers on this forum, and other car sites. I spent lots of time on CL, moving out City by City. Found mine in Grants Pass, Montana (I was in Socal at the time) Also a local one at a dealer with sim miles but some awful chrome crap on it but they wanted $29.5K. Spent 3 weeks with the Montana seller trading emails (he was an Eye doctor) and I finally flew up there and did the deed. Had a great 1200 mile drive home with it. ('04 C5Z Millennium Yellow, $1k of Clear Bra, dead stock, 17k miles. Talked him down to $24.5k, this was Summer of 2011)
Bought a 2003 z06 with 29k miles. It was located in Oregon but was originally was from the south. I'm super happy with it! It looks brand new and drives as good as I can tell! So much more power than my Honda I can't ever go back! Plans are all fresh oils, bridge stone potenzas, tint and a shift ****. Then phase 2 will be x pipe/exhaust. Can't freakin' wait!
I just bought some Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole position tires, 305-30-19 / 275-35-18 for just over $1000. I compared a lot of tires and for an around the town car with some fun thrown in, these seemed to be just what I needed. I gotta wait til I get back from my deployment to throw them on my new wheels and see how they are, but from what I read, I'm not worried. And of course, WE NEED PICS!
