Default Clear-coat issue

Has anyone had an issue with the clear-coat pealing on the front of your cars? I have silver dollars size pieces missing on my and wondering if that is common.

Thanks,

Scott

not on the front but I do have a couple of spots on hatch that the vert top stows under. They developed at the edge of the part on the back and seem to be expanding. On the to do list. Rest of the paint has held up famously.

Probably a repaint, haven't seen factory paint do this on a Vette.

Yeah, I was wondering if that was the case. Nothing showed on the CARFAX when I bought the car though.

If a previous owner payed out of pocket for a repair it won't show up on "CARFOX"

I've had three C5s and never had any clear coat issues.

CARFAX is a joke. I recently bought a Cadillac CTS and laid my eyes on a "clean" carfax for the car. Had a lady back into me and while in for minor repairs the insurance adjuster pulled up a history on the car showing the dealership buying the car at auction with frame damage!!!
Now it is unibody so any damage to specific areas is deemed "frame damge" and in depth investigation into it shows no real severe damge but still, Carfax is a joke!!!

To the OP's point . . .I think the deterioration of clear coat is partly a by product of how the car was cared for and stored over the years . .always stored in a garage, parked inside at work, waxed regularly - -lighter color, probably fewer issues.

I doubt it's anything out of the ordinary, but take it to a good bodyshop - - maybe they can light sand and re-clear . . .

Good luck-

water/rain in the area also can have a big effect. well water, depending on what's in it is more likely to etch the clear. add in driving the car in rain and or rinsing it off in 100deg heat and not drying it quickly. water etching can easily start the process you're describing. fairly common on 100k+ mile cars in general

The clearcoat on my front left fender behind the wheel started peeling off after a few months (bought the car new). They re-cleared it under warranty - no problems since (except the clear on the rear hatch which is a known issue that sometimes appears after a few years - which they also fixed under warranty).
