Looking at buying my 1st vette. Got my eye on a one owner 94 zr1 with 44k miles and a one owner 04 z06 with 29k miles. Both asking around $28k. I'm retired, and not made of money. Thoughts, opinions, thoughtful advice? Oh yeah, and I just recently learned how to change my own oil... LOL, so not particularly knowledgeable about how to treat the squirrels living in the engine... Do have a damn good mechanic, who's honest and that's been caring for my cars for about 15 years...

If it were me I would be looking more at the C5, I am not a fan of the looks of the C4 or the cockpit, Now keep in mind that this is just my opinion.
The C5 is a lot more advanced than the C4. You have to go with what you like, If you are a fan of the C4 than get it, I think a trat drive in both will help you decide.

Yeah that cost is one thing I'm wondering about. I have owned a Lotus Turbo Esprit and an Elan. I must admit to being a Lotus fan, those little devils are wicked fast. I've driven both vettes I am eyeing. The zr1 is a bloody insane beast and would require 100% of your attention at speed. The z06 was fast long run, not as quick off the line, but a more refined, slightly less unforgiving, at speed. I like the c6 body most, but there's quite a jump price-wise from the c5. I plan on getting rid of my 03 caddy (deVille) so the vette would be a daily driver. I'm thinking of joining SCCA and taking some high performance driving classes, maybe hit a race course with them now and again. I do have two friends who have base model c5s and they use them daily and love them (not a big fan of AT in a sports car-too many 60's era muscle cars in my past) and I do like bttw driving... lol...
If it's a daily driver I'd probably stay away from the c4 then. Not saying it can't be done but it's nothing I'd do. The cockpits in those are so tiny!
Yeah, at my age "daily driving" consists of dog parks and grocery stores... LOL... The small cockpit wasn't such an issue. At 5'10" and 140#, I don't take up a lot of space. And with the dog in the passenger seat, working the AAA maps, small and cozy just means not being asked to haul stuff (and stuff's owner) around...
As much as I like the ZR1, I wouldn't touch it. Parts availability is very bad and they can cost a small fortune. The 04Z will outperform it in every way and is much easier on the pocket book.
Let us know what you decide. Oh, pics are mandatory when you get one.

I would agree. Just price a few parts for the ZR1 and that might help with the decision. They were an extremely high tech fast car but at this point in time I think it is more for collecting than driving. The C4 cockpit never bothered me and my wife preferred the C4 seats to the C5 seats. The clamshell hood also made working on it very easy as I used the tire for a seat
