Hi I have a 2004 C5 and the shift control will not work, if I try to move the car to D or any option it will not do anything, if I press the black button to set reverse or drive the car is not doing anything.
If the shifter feels like a joystick - no firm click into a gear like it should - you may have had the plastic bushing at the transmission linkage disentegrate.
Jack the back up and look up on the driver side of the tranny where the shift linkage connects to verify. If that's it go to AutoZone, or similar, and buy the Dorman PN 14041 bushing pack and one of those will bushings will fit and fix you.
It that's not it someone else will chime in after you report.
If locked in PARK it is PROBABLY the SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID
I take it you have an automatic. Mine did the same thing fortunately in my garage and not somewhere on the road. Problem is the SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID which SHOULD RELEASE when you start the car and hit the brake. You have to get the center console off and release the plastic piece at the bottom of the shift boot. Not necessary to remove the shift boot. It is underneath the base of the shift boot toward the rear of the shifter. A single push on plug can be removed and the solenoid will not lock up anymore. Did mine about 5 years ago and have no problems since.
A few hours work with a screwdriver and maybe a nutdriver is all you need. Just take your time and don't break off any small plastic tabs.
I used a small screwdriver or a pointed soldering tool to unhook the plastic tabs on the base plate.
Thanks for the info guys, looks like I have to get the car to the dealer to get it fix they told me it will cost 500.00.
That's not good for a stupid cable or a plastic part.
Why not jack it up and take a look for yourself? The bushing package is $6.00 and easy to install. The cable is a bit over $100.00, but it's good just to see which it is before the towmobile comes.
I'm curious how the dealer knows already that it will be $500.00 to fix you.
