Default Double Din project- Need some ideas.

So I purchased a Pioneer AVH-X4500BT radio for my car, and obviously it's not going to fix without some custom work. I would really like to do the work myself rather than shelling out $400 on a bezel already made up.

What can I paint/wrap/etc. the radio bezel to make it match the factory black interior? I've thought of painting it body color (silver in my case) but I don't think it would look very good. I'd rather retain the textured black like it comes from the factory.

Please post up ideas on what I can do to make this bezel look factory, pictures are great also.

Thanks,
Conrad

I found this http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1551123954-post3.html in the audio section. There is a plethora of information over there. Dennis at DD Mods is a great guy to work with as well. He often has bezel/double din H.U specials so check him out.

I recently completed my double din project.

For re-shaping, I used exclusively ABS cement from lowes / home depot(only some stores have it so make sure to check online before making the trek)

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Oatey-8-o...6#.UZu2E8p2qMo

I used this both as an adhesive and filler. If using as a filler, use several light layers rather than one thick one as they will dry this way much faster. I also found using a Popsicle stick worked very well for smooth application of the goop.

Once you have the pieces in place, gaps filled and sanded (I went to 100gr) Then apply SEM texture coat:

http://www.semproducts.com/product-c...xture-coating/

Lightly sand with 400 grit to get rid of any excessive texture and repeat the process a second time to ensure full coverage. Wipe clean.

Then apply a couple coats of SEM low luster clear coat.

Awesome, thank you for the links! Do you have final pictures of the bezel installed? That would really help!

I think I may go with the painted body color bezel and center console instead of trying to match the factory black and texture.

I think sticking with the black is the way to go. Also, not sure if there will be room for the ashtray. This is how mine turned out.

Yeah but neither of those match the factory black texture. I know that will bug me. I'm going to smooth it all out, paint it silver and clear coat it.

I'm just looking for other options, but painting it seems like the best option so far.

I like how yours is a little recessed, I think I'll do something like that.

Did you have to shift the AC controls down? From what I've read, you need to modify the metal frame also?

I kind of want to add something to the ash tray area but I'm not sure yet. Gauges would be cool but I have no reason to have gauges.

Thanks yea I was goin for the flush look I wanted the radio flush with the ac controls
Yes I shifted the ac controls probably 1/2 to a inch down
And yes on the bottom of the steel frame on each side on the inside there's a bracket I had to remove a little bit from each side so that the ac controls would go in
I actually mounted the radio first then cut the bezel up then used the plastic trim ring for the radio glued it to the bezel with some epoxy so I knew where it had to go then fiberglassed it all

I just have no reason to keep the ash tray. Maybe I'll run my USB cord from the radio down there and form the area so my ipod has a place to sit. HMMMM.

Has any one thought of placing the ac controls above the double din radio? The radio that I have is too big to recess as much as i would like unless I drop it down several inches. The ac ducts are in the way in the back if I place the radio close to the original position. I will also delete the ashtray and leave a small flat panel for extra switches.

Pretty sure it's been done, don't see why not since it's got to be repositioned either way.
