Default Coolant Temp Problem

I was wondering if anyone else with an 02 Z06 was having high coolant temps. My temp has reached about 230 degrees and I don't feel that is normal. I was wonder what thermostat would be the best to change to. Also has anyone drilled holes in their thermostat? My friend has a GTP Grand Prix and he drilled four 1/16 th holes in his and hooke up a fan switch and his stays real cool. Has anyone else hooked up a fan switch to theirs? Any help given will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Under what conditions do you reach these temps? Hard use? Sitting in traffic ? This would not be abnormal when sitting at idle on a summer day. I think the fans come on around 226 or 228. A different thermostat would not help this condition .. programming the fans to come on sooner would be the better solution. IMHO, of course.

This occurs while sitting in traffic and while sitting at idle. Should I just go ahead and get a new thermostat any ways?

That's up to you, of course. A lot of guys seem to do this, but I'm not convinced it would help, unless you also change the fan turn-on temp. A cooler thermostat will make your car a little slower to warm up (because the thermostat will open sooner), but once the thermostat opens, it'll stay open, and by itself, shouldn't have much effect on warmed-up operating temps. Sitting at idle simply doesn't provide enough air flow thru the radiator to hold the coolant temps down... that's why the fans come on, which then causes the temp to go down. As long as coolant temps return to normal when the car is moving, I wouldn't worry about it.
