Does anyone know what the different parts are inside your remote? The typical parts that screw up are the solder joints on the chips, however my remote has a different problem....
In the top right corner of the picture is a component with a blue dot on it. When I shake it, I can hear a rattling sound like there is something inside broken off, bouncing around.
Does anyone know what that is and if I can get a new one from Radioshack or wherever for a buck and cut this one out and replace it?
That looks like a diode but would need to see the other side and any markings below it on the board or part. Diodes don't make mechanical noises; are you sure it's not loose and vibrating against the pcb?

The item in question in your picture is not a "diode" or a "crystal". It is a motion detecting switch found in all early C5 FOBs with the "Passive Unlock" feature. The rattle is normal as is the slide switch found on your FOB. The feature was discontinued by GM effective with the 2000 model year.

What goes bad on remotes are usually solder joints mostly on the clip that holds the battery in place. A dealership should have a tester to test the buttons and takes 15 seconds to test all the buttons.
I have had 2 Fobs go bad, both started to rattle like the dickens just before they went dead. We have the euipment to measure the continuity of the battery clips....not a problem at all..voltage was coursing around in the Fob as it should have, so the deadness was NOT related to the battery clips hair line cracking or solder failure...Outright Fob falure followed rattles starting up...You guys that have working Fobs that still rattle are lucky.... I never trued to just remove, or to remove and short the motion switches [ the things that look like 1960s era metal diodes ] but now that I read this thread, it might be a good idea..perhaps that is what is preventing propler operation.. I NEVER used the approach function anyway...bad idea to have a car unlock all by itself just by walking near it.

This is exactly the right answer. Your fob SHOULD rattle when you shake it. The rattle is actually what makes the contact when the remote is moved within a certain vacinity to the car to unlock it. Thats why if you leave the fob in the car and it locks. You can give the vette a little shake and it will unlock. My 98 has this feature, but I turn it off most of the time because I hang my keys on the wall of my garage next to the door. Every time I open then shut my garage entrance door it shakes the wall just enought to set off the remote causing the vette to honk at me all the time.

Changed mine to this: (flip-key fob)
Next week, I'll be up-grading to Radioflyer's All-New Passive Keyless entry/push-button setup with remote-start
Thanks for all the info guys, a friend of mine lost my first while set of keys and Fob in the pool at the Hard Rock, and this last one's dead too. I'll look into the upgrade for the newer style, I liked the passive but I didn't like buying a battery for the damn thing twice a month either, thanks again.
