Default need some idea's

ok, this morning before work i went for a quick drive to visit a buddy that wanted to check out my new SLP powerflo catback exhaust system. as a side note i love this system! (will get into this in another post) anyway we were out cruising (on a road that is out of the city and has little to no traffic) and i did a couple run through the gears to get a feel for the sound of the powerflo system, and out of the blue i get a belt/pulley squeak! i had thought that was taken care of! i have replaced both belts with dayco belts from napa, the ac idler and tension pulleys both new (when diagnosing the problem, i took the belts off one at a time and it was the ac system squeaking) and when i replaced these parts the squeak was initially gone. so after a few shifts up to maybe 5000 rpm's to about 3rd gear the squeak came back! on the way home i noticed that the squeak only happened at about 1800 rpm's and above, and as the journey home continued the squeak slowly raised in the rpm range till by the time i got home 10-15 min, it had gone up to around 2500 rpm. what the heck could this be? i feel that if i drove a little longer the squeak may have gone away. (unless i did some more pulls to higher rpm) any idea's are very much appreciated!

Doing some thinking, I think maybe I have two separate problems. A high rpm/load squeal and a low rpm ac system squeak, which I think is fixed, and the other which I don't notice cause I don't drive around at 5000 rpm's all the time. What could cause a high rpm squeal/ squeak?

Sorry for my short response but I was on my Android.

Most likely your belts are slipping at the higher RPM's. I know you just bought the Dayco's but the Vette likes the Gatorbacks. To me they have a softer compound which makes them grab the pulleys a little better. There are a couple of vendors that sell them here or you can go to that auction site.

well about and hour ago i took the Vette out of the shop to take the wife for a little drive and run a couple errands. as soon as i started the car the squeak was back at idle (never did this before) and it's way worse than it has ever been, plus now there is a ticking sound to boot!! kinda getting real frustrated with this car right now! its making me i spend more time working on this car than driving it. i guess i just need to vent!

I really love the lines on this car, and I've wanted a Vette ever since i was a kid (long time). Gonna cool down and go out to the shop tomorrow and try figure this out. I do not want to give up yet, I feel that once I fix this I will be good for the summer. I sure hope so anyway...

I'm having similar issues and noted the harmonic balancer just doesn't seem as true as all the other pulleys.

Before seeing that I noted the upper tensioner was wobbly. Replaced that and the upper belt and the chirping is now different.

I'm thinking I have the dreaded "wobbly" balancer and am getting an appointment with our local 'Vette guru.

Might this be your problem too?

With the car running, look at the harmonic balancer with a flashlight and see if it is wobbling. That is a known problem and could be the cuprit, you may have to change it out.

Definitely considered the wobbly pulley syndrome, unless the wobble is real small I can't see it! Does not mean that it's not failing though. I wish we had a Vette guru up here where I live! Anyone know of a Vette guru on Vancouver island? How about Vancouver B.C.? I know there are some great shops south of the border, but I can't go there just yet, have to get a new passport for that. I have heard that Tom Wong in Vancouver Washington is real good? Maybe one day I can take it there, but in the short term if I can't figure this out gonna need some help from the pros that are a reasonable distance from me.

I'll have a look at that tomorrow and let ya know what it looks like. Question: how much does it wobble? Is it easily discernible? Thanks!

Yep, I'm on Tom's waiting list.

On mine, it's barely discernible but not smooth looking, especially compared to other pulleys. Just barely a wobble.

I tried the garden hose to the ear trick to see where it was and could NOT get a good read on it. ....weird. Usually that can pinpoint any noise.

Could have glazed pulleys that also glazed the new belts. I put in multiple pulleys for everything on the my 98, including a few new belts. Always a sqweaking noise during running. Got much faster with driving. I eventually took a soapy sponge and whiped my belts as the engine was running. It minimized the noise, but then when I put on a new Continental belt... GONE!

Another suggestion is trying to rub the pulleys and belts down with a light scotchbrite pad. It will give them some texture to grab instead of slip.

I can give that a go tomorrow when I try and diagnose what's happening.

Are you installing another oem balancer or going aftermarket? And I am starting to believe that the dayco's are at least part of my problem. Gonna order some gatorbacks, can't hurt.
