BTW, mine takes a full 7 to reach the full mark on the stick. There was this whole debate about relocating the stick for the '01s, and that the extra half quart may not be required, but since they tell you to over fill for road course work, I figure I'm fine (plus, I burn a little, although at 8K on the clock that seems to have slowed).
The official GM stance has been 6.5 quarts (total, including filter). I think it depends on how thoroughly you drain it. If the car is level when it drains, it'll probably take 6.5. If you give it a long drain with the butt-end high (as I did), it will take about 7. However you drain it, check the level afterward and top it off to the full line.
Oil capacity with filter is 6.5 quarts. They also tell you to add one full quart for racing because it will help keep the oil cooler but this can hurt fuel economy and raise oil pressure when cold. So you need to watch oil pressure and don't WOT below 150-170 degrees F or you could spike it bad. Since average oil pressure drops when the oil is very hot, like at the track, 7.5 quarts is appropriate then.
There is no need to have more than 6.5 quarts for street driving in the 2002.
