Default remote transmitter fobs

my sister just purchased a 1998 c5 coupe , It only came with the door keys and no remote fobs. I purchased from gm the original fobs, do I have to have them programmed by dealer or is there some instructions out there so i can do it myself?

Here is something I copied for future use incase I ever had this problem, try it, hope it helps

ALL,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, C5s have the use of the FOB for locking/unlocking/trunk and panic alarm.

You MUST retrain your FOBs to get them to work with the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) and the Body Control Module. (BCM)

To program the FOB/s, use the OPTIONS button and scrool thru the menu until you come to a BLANK page.

This is directly out of the 2002 C5 OWNERS MANUAL (all fob programming is the same for all years!)Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle!

Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to
prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be
purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any
remaining transmitters with you when you go to your
dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement
transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters
must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the
new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock your
vehicle. Each vehicle can have a maximum of three
transmitters matched to it.
To match transmitters to your vehicle:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver
Information Center (DIC) by pressing the
RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several
times until the blank page is displayed, then press
and hold the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed,
press the RESET button once. The message HOLD
LK + UNLK 1ST FOB in the DIC will be displayed.
5. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the
first transmitter simultaneously for five seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned (matched), the DIC
will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you
to learn the second transmitter.
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the third transmitter.
8. Remove the key from the ignition.
The programming mode will shut off if any of following
has occurred:
You don’t program any transmitters for two minutes.
You take the key out of the ignition.
You have programmed three transmitters.

IF you follow this procedure and it doesnt work, your fob has a bad battery OR it isnt working OR both. If you have tire pressure readings, the RFA is working properly and sending data to the BCM.

You should fill out you avaitar so we know more info about your car.. What year is your C5. I would have provided you a direct link to a PDF copy of your cars Owners manual.

Use GOOGLE and type in the search block (GM C5 Owners Manuals) or just go to this link:

Here is the link for the COMPLETE 2002 Owners Manual:

http://www.ufgop.org/browse/a2V5d29y...J2ZXR0ZS5wZGY=

Here is the page that it was found on. All the C5 Owners manuals can be found for FREE on line in PDF format!

http://www.ufgop.org/pdf/c5-corvette-service-manual/

Once you TRAIN your FOBs to your c5,, you can perform a FOB SYNC Procedure by pressing and HOLDING the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the FOB until the horn toots.

Make sure they sold you the correct fobs for the 98. They are the larger fatter fobs. Original 98-99 had passive slide switches on the face. A 2000 fob did not have the switch, but will work with a 98. A 2001 and newer fob will not train to a 98 unless it's had the entire RFA system changed over to the new style.

What the ......? That dealer should be exposed and anyone in the vette world should not do business with them! That's just plain highway robbery. I would've "talked" to one of the higher ups over there and refused to pay. That's B.S.!

I've heard of dealers asking $50, never $100+. Especially dishonest considering the whole procedure is in the Owner's Manual, they should offer to rip you off on the price of one of those too

I have an '04 Colorado midsize, the only way to program the FOBs is by a dealer and the FOBs cost twice as much.

Hopefully the OP got the fobs programmed to his car. Good set of instructions posted above.

Congrats to your sister

Just a thought but she will have paid way over the odds for fobs at the dealer. Not sure if she can take them back but she would get them way cheaper at either one of the Forum parts dealers or on Flea Bay.

She needs the older fobs for a 98. The part numbers should be 97-99 - 10253839. Self program using the instructions above but make sure you have a BIG magnet or it wont go into learning mode.

Congrats on the C5 purchase. I bought a new remote (1) and key. They charged me 30 for the key and 90 for the remote; they also wanted 60 bucks to program it. Thanks for the instructions here; they matched perfectly with what my Service Manager printed for me. It literally took 1 - 2 minutes to reprogram the new remote and my current remote. Thanks again.

Good question for a Service Manager at a Dealer. I just recently purchased one for the make model and specific year for my Vette. My guess is no......keep us posted on what you find out though or if anyone knows here, I'd love to know the answer too.

DeeGee, what are you smoking today? A magnet to program the fobs? I know, I know, you meant to train the tire pressure sensors.

It will NOT. 2001 and up must be the new style. 2000 and back will all program across years 1997-2000. Years 2001 and newer use a different frequency.

Will only work on 2001-04. You can buy those fobs on ebay for under $15, but the older ones are very expensive. Usually over $70 and I wouldn't advise buying one of the older styles used. You'll have to replace it again soon. I'd recommend gmpartshouse.com for new 98-99 and 2000 fobs.
