I'd check the brake light switch at the pedal. My 97 had a separate switch for the cruise disconnect, don't know about later ones. Maybe someone can chime in with an adjustment procedure. I just squashed a finger between the pedal and the switch and pulled up til I heard it click (it doesn't take that much to move it)
There must be one on the clutch too.

Reason: Added clutch
Pull the codes. There are many postings on how to do this.
You may have a failing steering position sensor. When the cruise control drops read the codes before turning off the engine. The codes to look for are 1287 and 1288. If either come up the SWPS should be replaced.
When my SWPS failed on my 03 AE 6-speed it threw no codes, to the point that the local dealer was reluctant to replace the part. It malfunctioned the week before I had a 2,200 mile road trip planned so I was up against the wall to get it resolved. The dealer had the part so I had them change it. Problem solved.
The part is around $100 and it is a 3-hour job.
What you will probably encounter next is a warning in the display module concerning a traction control issue [can't remember exactly what it said]. You may also feel the traction control apply itself occasionally and the car slow down.
It doesn't hurt to try to adjust the brake switch. Who knows, you may get lucky, but I'll bet that the SWPS is simply dying of old age.
I had somewhat of a similar problem a few years back. The Set button on my CC stalk was very sensitive. While attempting to diagnose the problem, I set the cruise control and then just barely touched the button - not even 1/16 of an inch. Sure enough, the CC disengaged. It got to the point where I could replicate the problem just by tapping the top of the stalk.
Once I replaced the stalk with a new one, the problem went away.
I'm not saying that's your problem, but it's worth a try, plus it might help others who may read this thread in the future.
