private, we don't have **** state inspection places. I think St Louis and KC may have emissions testing but I don't know where they go, and I don't care where they go.
It costs us12 bucks for a two year inspection. A lot of people hate inspections but I actually like them. I have found out about issues I didn't know about by having an inspection.
The trick is to find a mechanic that does inspections that you use as a mechanic shop and one that you trust.
I have that mechanic. But others aren't so lucky.
I also always tell them to look for issues that may need addressed in the near future. I try to avoid break downs at all costs. They also always ask if I want them to do the work or do I want to do it myself. And they always have a cost breakdown for me.
This is how I found out about my rear outer tie rod ends.

Pa. has state authorized inspection stations that are sometimes just mom and pop auto repair shops or you can go to a car dealer if you want to get ripped off.
We don't have state inspections in Oklahoma. They hope that you have a tail light or tag light out so that they can pull you over a write a ticket and look for other things wrong.
my brother in law used to have a vette and he recommended a small state station not far and i am going to try them first. the one i take my work car to can't even put the new decal on straight. there is glue all over the corner of my windshield. and when they drive it through doesn't seem like they care about their job let alone my car.

Private or I have a excellent relationship with a Chevy dealership about 30 miles away. They are A VERY Good Family owned and operated dealership. Never had a single complaint in year of dealing with them. And I can have coffee and relax, the tech they have works on ONLY corvettes for this dealership and or if I want, I take it to County Corvette Inc. They are a little farther, but I know the owners and they are two excellent gentlemen and a real pleasure to deal with and they have state of the art technicians spanning every year Corvette, And there is NOTHING, they can't Do. I love to just wander through the stable, I get to sit in a 1963 silver with black interior SWC.
I first saw a 1963, at Erwin Chevrolet,a Philadelphia dealership when I was 15 walking home from high school, and I fell in love at first sight. It looked like nothing at al on the roads of that day. The silver looks like ice and a salesmen let me sit in it. I thought I was in a F-86 jet fighter. It was a once in a lifetime experience.
When living in Texas I just took my car to a family owned business and they always wrote me a sticker and sent me on my way without checking anything (their son owned a diesel performance shop inside their MASSIVE shop so they knew what it was like modding cars and federal laws lol). I now live in Arkansas and they don't have any kind of inspections/sniffers/emissions/etc. I think all states should be like this lol.

Just took mine to my local Chevy dealer this year, but in the past I have taken it to a variety of the local tire shops that do inspections. No big deal - they just look at the car and pass it. No emissions testing where I live.
Ours have be inspected every year and it's $29.00 You can take it anywhere that does inspections. Did my car when I bought it last month and it passed with flying colors. Next june do it again.
I was hemming and hawing between private and public in NJ. I decided to go with the local public DMV station. Where I live, you have to make an appointment for the inspection rather than jump into the chaos combine that is in most other public inspection stations in NJ.
No issues, no stupidity, the guy didn't do a 50 foot smoker in the inspection building. Actually when he got out we talked for a couple minutes about the car and I answered a few questions he had.
So, all in all, it was a good experience. But I'd never take it to one of the busy stations where it is a total free-for-all.

i went to the station in washington nj and they where great. this place you have to make an appointment also but they were gentle with the vette. had a little tray to catch the old sticker as they scraped it off and pu the new sticker on so you can't even tell they changed it. definitely going back there in two years.
Private. Whatever state you live in, if there is a requirement that they jack up your car any distance, don't expect the State inspection station to know to use the pucks.
"I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that my 'Vette passed the state inspection.
The bad news is that my rocker panels are now horribly cracked."

Sorry to read about the damage!!
those state run inspection stations don't have a high IQ requirement ....
State inspection laws and practices vary a lot by state...
If its a vehicle that I expect to pass, I almost always take it to a dealership. In Texas, the prices are fixed, so its the same price no matter where you go, so I figure I may as well take it to a dealership, because they'll do a more thorough inspection of the vehicle to try and sell stuff to me. And, a lot of the luxury dealerships around here will give you a free car wash with a state inspection.
For a vehicle that I think might not pass.... there's a few places around town that I know which are a little more forgiving....
