Most of the used cars only have one key and one remote fob because the PO lost one set. I've found out about measuring the resistance of the key and ordering for $9.99 online the appropriate blank and having it cut by a locksmith for maybe $2 (instead of paying the stealer $100-125+ to make you a new key), but why is it so hard to find a remote for a 2000 C5 for less than $90-100? Some of these have the passive feature (which you can disable anyway), but it is a 4 button remote - lock, unlock, panic and trunk- so what is different about this remote than one for a 2002 and up car which only costs ~$30 and also has 4 buttons? Is the computer totally different and it won't recognize the later remotes?
The GM part # for the 2000 C5 is 10253839 and I believe has since been changed, but is there a difference in remotes over the years, and does any one else have an inexpensive source for these?
Thanks.

Can't help you with the fob question, but I got a spare key at the local Chevy dealer for a whole whopping $32.
And he ground it faster than the kid at the hardware store can do a single-sided house key.
Mr. Bill - OK, gotcha. But that's probably more trouble and expense than it's worth. Thanks. I'll just keep looking, maybe I'll be lucky and find a good used one, or just go for the $100, which seems a little ridiculous. At least I can get another key made for just $15-20 and not the stealership price.
Lee - I'll check with my local dealer and a few locksmiths, but I've heard of that high price, and my local Walmart right here says they can make one of those keys, and they want $58. All you have to do to "program" it is to measure the resistance of the little metal part embedded in the black plastic in the hub of the key. They made 14 or 15 different keys for all the 'vettes to make it a little harder to steal, there is no computer or RFID chip in there, just a resistor of a value programmed into the car. You select the right key blank with the same resistor as your other key, then cut it to match. No big deal.

The 2000 C5 did not have a passive keyless entry system - it was an active system which means you had to press the lock/unlock buttons to lock the car/arm the alarm system. I know my '99 had the PKE system with the sliding switch but my '00 did not.
If I'm not mistaken, the '00 fob was a one year only deal - so maybe that's why it is so expensive.
They made a fob with a #1 and a #2 designation. Is the difference with or without the passive feature? I wouldn't want that feature anyway, just something to open and lock the doors and release the rear hatch. I previously had a '99 and I don't remember the passive feature on the remote, maybe I had it off all the time.
The eBay item from GMPartshouse for ~$90 says it's a new OEM that fits 97-2000 years and does not have the passive feature.

The 1 and 2 numbered smaller fobs are on the new type (01-04) and they will not program to a pre 01 car unless you change out the receiver (and tire pressure sensors if you want those to work). The 97-99 cars had a passive off/on slide switch which will have no effect on a 2000, but the fob will program and work. The 2000 fob does not have a switch, and will program to the 97-99, but the passive feature of those years will not work with the 2000 fob. Basically what you need is a 2000 fob. I would not buy used, there have been MANY on here that failed. It begins with losing sync and gets worse until it no longer works. There is a fix, but since you are looking for a fob, I won't get into that. The cheapest one I have seen new is from gmpartshouse.com for $69, but I haven't checked in recent months. I will check and post back shortly the current price.
Looks like you are correct, they only have one fob for 97-2000 and it's $81. I had two for mine, but one hung on the key rack and was never used. Again, the 01-04 fobs will NOT program to the 2000. Here's from the website:
||--Genuine GM Key FOBS/Transmitters--||
10253839 – 97-99 – See Note Below.
10432147 – 00 - See Note Below.
Both the 10253839 and 10432147 FOB’s have changed to 19299230. GM has changed both FOB’s into one part number FOB covering years 1997-2000.

My local dealer measured the pellet and cut the key in 2 mins for $27.00
At GMpartsdirect it's now $68.34 for the fob and then they want $18.03 for shipping and handling, which is insane. So that comes to $87.39.
They could put it well packed in bubblewrap in a blister envelope, they don't need it in a $15.00 box.
At GMpartshouse it's $81.60 plus $9.99 shipping, total of $91.59.
So I guess I'll get it from one of those places.
Thanks for all the info.

I'd take those quoted prices to a local dealer and see if they'd price match.
