My 03 C5 has a wierd problem. To the right of the speedo/tach dash housing is a small panel of pushbuttons that allow selecting fuel mileage, trip length, tire pressures, etc. Last night I noticed that the top two buttons no longer illuminate. How can these be fixed or bulbs replaced? It does not appear to be a friendly assembly to remove.
they are replacable, but its not the most fun thing in the world to do. you have to take the instrument cluster out of the car to get to them. the easiest way is to remove the lower knee bolster, the aluminum bracket behind it, and then remove the two nuts that hold the steering column in. its not as scary as it sounds, doing that allows the column to drop about 1" or so, just barely enough room to fit the cluster out between the dash and the steering wheel. one its out replacing those bulbs is pretty easy, they are just twist lock type bulbs. I'm not sure what the best place to get them is if you want to replace them with stock, but you can get aftermarket lights that fit in there that use LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs, those usually look good but sometime are a little troublesome to make fit. the dealer can probably sell you the factory orig bulbs, but I bet they are way too expensive for what they are. maybe talk to gmpartshouse.com and see if they can order them.
One bulb provides illumination for 2 buttons. Contact TSTAR if you want to get an OEM replacement. He does LED modifications and has plenty of original spares. I got several from him.
