Default Starting issue

I am having an issue when starting my '02 Z06. It happens sporadically, but I will get in the car and turn the key...nothing happens. It's the same as if you turned they key without pushing in the clutch. The lights stay on and everything, just nothing happens. Sometimes I'll wait 2 minutes and it'll be fine. Sometimes it takes a bit longer. It has yet to leave me stranded anywhere, but it is rather annoying.

I thought it was a bad clutch pedal position switch so I replaced that, but the problem still persists. Any thoughts?

Search the tech section. I had the same symptoms and it was the starter or the starter solenoid. Replaced it and was good to go. Lots of discussion if you can just replace the solenoid but it was not worth my time or effort and I just replaced the whole thing with a Bosch from Amazon.

I think you know it is the starter if you tap it with a broom handle while turning the key and it starts. I had to do this a few times to get it going and the no start got progressively worse for me. I cut an old broom in half and kept in the car.

had this problem earlier this year, the more i searched the website the more frustrated i got as there were links taking me in every direction.

i took the ignition module out and cleaned the contacts and when i did i notice that one of the rollers inside the lock had come loose...you know, the ones that measure the key's resistance.

measured the key's resistance with an meter and went to radio shack and bought a variable resistor, dialed it in and wired it in. no problems since. cost me 4 dollars and about 2 hours of time.

Good luck!

Try the other key.

I had a similar issue years ago with a GM car, drove me crazy as it was intermittent. And the dealer couldn't get it to fail...because I'd given him the spare key so I wouldn't have to take mine off the ring. Turned out the key had gone bad: best guess was the resistor itself had gotten worn down to the point it was outside the limits.

Thanks for the replies guys. I tried to search, but like Tyteflows said, I got nowhere quick.

Start by telling us what the security light does when you have this symptom. Blinks?? Out?? stays on solid???

Then pull and post all your DTC's including the H or C or HC that follow each 5 position DTC:
The only codes I am getting besides P0140 and P0160, due to having no cats, is B2284 and B2282 under the LDCM. Sometimes I get the same codes for the right door as well. I noticed that sometimes my door mirrors will be pointed in weird directions and I have to adjust them. Think this is related?

Also, the security light goes out when I turn the key.

I am going to try my other key for a week or so and see if the problem persists. How can I clean the ignition switch contacts in the event that I still have problems?

Always smart to try the free fixes first

So I tried the other key and thought I was home free. I didn't have any issues....until yesterday. I had to push start it

So, I saw a write up on how to clean the ignition switch here (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ch-repair.html), and I am going to try that next. I am also going to try and tap the starter with a piece of wood, or something else I can hit it with, and see if maybe the starter is the issue. I used to have to do that with one of my other cars when I had a similar issue, so...who knows. Hopefully I can replicate the problem again without it leaving me stranded again, lol.

...and how long did you use the "sawed-off-broom handle" method to start your car?

I recently had the exact problem. Everything else worked, no Security-flash or anything..Tried both keys, clean ignition, replace battery-connections. But the car wouldn´t start, first sporadically until one day it wouldn´t start at all. Then I lightly jammed the starter with a hammer and fastened the plus cable(was a little loose) and since then it´s started every day So try check all the connections and some soft punches to the starter and your car will work. (Or buy a new starter) Good luck, I know its frustrating!!

I took apart the ignition this afternoon and found this:

Pretty much exactly what Bill Curlee found in the one he took apart in his repair thread. I cleaned them up with a pencil eraser and alcohol, and bent the connectors so they stay a little bit more tight. Put it all back together and it started right up. Now, just gotta give it a week or so to see if this was the permanent solution.
