Upgrading the FWV
Been thinking of trading my Foul Weather Vehicle (2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4) and, I kinda wanted to go GM for the next one and, had my eye on a '09 Silverado with only 46k on the clock so, I did some research on them and found a lot of them have a problem with the 5.3L engine using oil after 30k miles or so. Some as high as 1qt per 2k miles.
On further reading, I found that this is caused in part by the AFM system and, as usual, GM is saying that this use is "normal" and are not doing anything about it unless it gets as bad as 1qt per 1k miles and then some people have reported that GM, after doing a lengthy "Oil consumption test" will replace pistons, rings, valve covers and install a splash guard in the oil pan. Which just delays the oil consumption for another 30k miles some say.
Just wondering if any of you have experience with the 5.3L engines with AFM?
This truck I'm looking at has a pretty nice price on it and I was wondering if this oil problem might be the reason. My old Dodge has a 5.9L engine with 115K miles on it and it only uses 1/2qt between 3k mile oil changes.
