Not generally, I've seen lots of failed shocks, never heard one make those noises. Probably a bushing.

A pair of sway bar bushings is $16.95 on Amazon. Replacing them is a matter of removing 2 bolts each, swapping them out and replacing the bolts. 1/2 hour job if you have ramps, including beer break.

Please tell me you aren't going to spend $300 for this.

If you can change oil, you can change sway bar bushings.

I'll do it for $295.00!

Just kidding, really...don't spend that much to have it done. Easy job. If you are not mechanically inclined find a friend that is and buy him some beer and pizza or something. I just hate it when shops and "stealerships" do that to folks.

My front ones were squeaking, tried lubing them, did not work, replaced them, fixed.

Here is a source, make sure you get the right ones, depends on suspension.

What type noise do they make? Thump or clunking noise?

when my shocks started going bad they made a squeak (sounded like a seal barking) when i would hit bumps a certain way. Best way to check is to see if there is fluid leaking out.

Pick up some silicone grease from O'reilly's, get out the floor jack, and spend about a half hour fixing your issue!

NO you do not need an alignment if you take the sway bar off.

You would if you take the control arm off (much bigger job)

The link below shows brake pad and sway bar replacement

About the same amount of time if you have a pair of race jacks too. I swapped out both of my sway bars, their bushings, and all four end links in a little over an hour. It's one of the easiest things to replace on the entire car.

Ouch!. Seriously, If someone told you they have to replace the sway bar in order to replace the bushings, YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF.

These bushing are available separately on Amazon, Ecklers, MidAmerica, zip-corvette, GMPartsHouse, etc. Just order the correct size according to your suspension option.

23mm --- FE1/Base
25.4mm --- FE3/Z51 97-99
28.6mm --- FE3/Z51 00-04
30.0mm --- FE4/Z06
31.75mm --- Hotchkis
38.4mm --- GM T1

Also note, that no wheel alignment should be required when replacing the bushings.

I would also suggest reporting whoever told you that to the BBB, or someone.
