Shocks do NOT Lift the car... springs set the ride height... shocks only dampen up and down movement. To prove my point you can take any shock and by hand, move the shock to any point in its travel. Bilstein shock have a slightly higher dampening rate and thus give a harsher ride.
I agree in most cases, unless totally worn out. I had a leaking shock on my c4, it made that corner at least an inch lower. I put on softer shocks while getting Bilsteins rebuilt to a road race valving. The soft shocks brought the car up level, then once the Bilsteins were on, it brought it up a little more.
If you tried the bounce test on the car, it would seem ok, as I don't think it had much or any travel downward.

If you are approaching 100K and have no failed shock, the internal valves cause gas to flow at a greater rate reducing their ability to respond as quickly when dampening. that's why I changed mine out at 90K. for those who think it effects the ride height it no more effects it than when jacking up the car. once the car settles the ride height stays constant, based on the load aspect of the springs.
In the 12 years I've been on this forum, I've been battling what I often refer too as Urban legend.. this, like many other automotive forums is loaded with this urban legend stuff. And the ever present Legends in their own mind, who think because someone told them something many years ago, that it's gospel, when in fact much is plain Ca Ca...

Its very easy to check the dampening of the shocks with a simple bounce test. Factory shocks are extremely well built. easily lasting 100K. unless the shock leaks which is very rare.
People spend money on shocks because the think they are bad after X miles. if the corner does not bounce, the shock is doing its job. if the shock dampens the bounce in one movement the shock is good. a bad shock will bounce more than one time.
you cant buy better street shocks for your C5 than 2013 Z06 shocks and at 63 dollars a piece they are a real bargain. They bolt right up and will easily last 15 years and 100,000 miles. as far as tight body roll performance, new 2013 Z51 sways will enhance any C5's fun factor. at 208 dollars for both fronts and reads with bushings it's another steal. Add the new quiet 2013 ( new design ) end links and you have what others offer for twice the money.
